La obra de Niklas Luhmann es notoria por su complejidad y fuerte abstracción. Madurada en un diálogo crítico con la que constituía entones (años sesenta del siglo XX) la perspectiva predominante –el funcionalismo social de Talcott Parsons—; su teoría de sistemas constituye el intento por renovar dicho paradigma. Con este fin,Luhmann apostó por el contacto interdisciplinar con otras ciencias (matemática, lógica, biología, neurofisiología, etc.) y la teoría de sistemas se erigió como el vehículo que proporcionaba tanto el esquema analítico como el repertorio conceptual con que abordar dicha tarea. «Distinciones directrices», «dispositivos de estructuración», «(sub)sistemas», «diferenciación funcional», «autopoiesis», «conectividad», «realizaciones»,… son algunos ejemplos de la conceptualización mediante la cual el autor emprendió su ambicioso proyecto intelectual: elaborar una teoría de la sociedad y de su evolución. En este libro se recogen diez aportaciones que ofrecen un panorama bastante exhaustivo del trabajo prácticamente inabarcable del prolífico sociólogo alemán.Los dos primeros ensayos recogen de una manera general su esquema analítico,esto es, la arquitectura básica de su teoría de la diferenciación funcional. A continuación se han seleccionado seis ensayos donde comprobamos cómo se articula el concepto de «distinciones directrices» en diversas esferas sociales: la economía, la familia, la educación, la sanidad, la religión y el arte. Los dos últimos ensayos abordan cuestiones más transversales: la estratificación social en sociedades funcionalmente diferenciadas, y el tema de la globalización, este último abordado desde un planteamiento heterodoxo. La presente edición incluye una introducción del catedrático de Sociología de la Universidad de Oviedo José María García Blanco, uno de los mayores expertos en nuestra lengua de la obra de N. Luhmann.

This book presents an academic analysis of exorcism in Christianity. It not only explores the crisis and drama of a single individual in a fight against demonic possession but also looks at the broader implications for the society in which the possessed lives. In recognition of this, coverage includes case studies from various geographical areas in Europe, North and South America, and Oceania. The contributors explore the growing significance of the rite of exorcism, both in its more structured format within traditional Christian religions as well as in the less controlled and structured forms in the rites of deliverance within Neopentecostal movements. They examine theories on the interaction between religion, magic, and science to present new and groundbreaking data on exorcism. The fight against demonic possession underlines the way in which changes within the religious field, such as the rediscovery of typical practices of popular religiosity, challenge the expectations of the theory of secularization. La incertidumbre parece omnipresente en el mundo social contemporáneo, y más aún en esta coyuntura pandémica. Era patente ya en los mercados financieros, la tecnociencia, el cambio climático o las nuevas formas de vulnerabilidad. No puede extrañar, por tanto, que haya diagnósticos sociológicos muy diversos (Bauman, Luhmann, Beck, Wynne, etc.) que la presentan como uno de los rasgos distintivos de nuestro mundo. Carecemos, sin embargo, de una reflexión suficientemente detallada y sistemática sobre su papel en las sociedades contemporáneas. Esta obra pretende contribuir a llenar ese vacío. Con ese fin, los primeros capítulos revisan el campo semántico en el que esos diagnósticos sitúan la incertidumbre —entre una forma de no-saber y un saber que muestra las grietas de lo que se daba por cierto— y su tensa relación con la certeza, la indeterminación y la supervivencia. El resto de los trabajos analizan la gestión de la incertidumbre en situaciones concretas, como la valorización financiera, la investigación aeroespacial, el terrorismo yihadista, la intervención social, el Big data, la naturaleza, la responsabilidad social de las empresas o la viabilidad de los neonatos prematuros. El resultado, clarificador, muestra también la complejidad y los límites de la incertidumbre.
