La incertidumbre parece omnipresente en el mundo social contemporáneo, y más aún en esta coyuntura pandémica. Era patente ya en los mercados financieros, la tecnociencia, el cambio climático o las nuevas formas de vulnerabilidad. No puede extrañar, por tanto, que haya diagnósticos sociológicos muy diversos (Bauman, Luhmann, Beck, Wynne, etc.) que la presentan como uno de los rasgos distintivos de nuestro mundo. Carecemos, sin embargo, de una reflexión suficientemente detallada y sistemática sobre su papel en las sociedades contemporáneas. Esta obra pretende contribuir a llenar ese vacío. Con ese fin, los primeros capítulos revisan el campo semántico en el que esos diagnósticos sitúan la incertidumbre —entre una forma de no-saber y un saber que muestra las grietas de lo que se daba por cierto— y su tensa relación con la certeza, la indeterminación y la supervivencia. El resto de los trabajos analizan la gestión de la incertidumbre en situaciones concretas, como la valorización financiera, la investigación aeroespacial, el terrorismo yihadista, la intervención social, el Big data, la naturaleza, la responsabilidad social de las empresas o la viabilidad de los neonatos prematuros. El resultado, clarificador, muestra también la complejidad y los límites de la incertidumbre.

The long-lasting hegemonic rule of President Hugo Chávez not only involved significant rearrangements in the control of political power in Venezuela but also shifts in the way its citizens constructed, connected and interacted with politics. In this book, Elena Block explores the political communication style developed by Chávez to transmit his ideologies and engage with his publics — A style that unfolded incrementally between 1998, the year of his first presidential campaign, and March 13th 2013 when his death was announced after a long struggle with cancer. What sort of political communication did Hugo Chávez develop to establish hegemony in Venezuela? What made him so popular? Block argues that Chávez’s political communication style can be better understood through the concept of mimetisation, a systematic sequence of communicational events and practices whereby the Venezuelan President managed to build a bond with his constituents. Applying a mixed qualitative method of collection and analysis of relevant data, this phenomenon is examined via the President’s emotional use of common cultural symbols; dramatized and informalised language; savvy use of communication and media, and boost of inclusive, compensatory, and participatory practices in which his constituents not only felt mimetically mirrored, but also endowed with an identity. Shedding new light on contemporary theories of populism from the perspective of political communication and identity construction, the notion of mimetisation can be adjusted and applied to study the links of populist phenomena, the mediatisation of politics and government, cultural appeal and identity politics in other cultures and situations in contemporary times.

Comparing two consequential movements that shed light on the nature of revolution Revolutions in Cuba and Venezuela compares the sociopolitical processes behind two major revolutions—those of Cuba in 1959, when Fidel Castro came to power, and Venezuela in 1999, when Hugo Chávez won the presidential election. With special attention to the Cuba-Venezuela alliance, particularly in regards to foreign policy and the trade of doctors for oil, Silvia Pedraza and Carlos Romero show that the geopolitical theater where these events played out determined the dynamics and reach of the revolutions. Updating and enriching the current understanding of the Cuban and Venezuelan revolutions, this study is unique in its focus on the massive exoduses they generated. Pedraza and Romero argue that this factor is crucial for comprehending a revolution’s capacity to succeed or fail. By externalizing dissent, refugees helped to consolidate the revolutions, but as the diasporas became significant political actors and the lifelines of each economy, they eventually served to undermine the social movements. Using comparative historical analysis and data collected through fieldwork in Cuba and Venezuela, as well as from immigrant communities in the US, Pedraza and Romero discuss issues of politics, economics, migrations, authoritarianism, human rights, and democracy in two nations that hoped to make a better world through their revolutionary journeys.
