This work brings together, in a condensed format, a broad selection of over 2,300 prominent Americans whose ancestors were of German-speaking origin. For the benefit of the reader, each of these distinguished citizens has been categorized according to his or her contributions and placed into thirteen user-friendly directories, namely: Artistic Talents; Sporting Personalities and Brewers; Clergy; Educators, Scholars and Historians; Engineers, Inventors, Bridge-Builders and Tinkerers; Entertainment World; High Finance and Big Business; Government; Medical Sciences; World of Music; Printing and Publishing World; Natural Sciences; and, Men and Women at War. A typical entry includes, when available, the full name, birth and death dates, and which generation of the family in America that individual represented. Oftentimes the entries will include the stage-name or the original spelling of the surname if the name had been changed in America. Each table is preceded by text which attempts to place each occupational category into an historic context. Selective profiles of representative individuals citing specific achievements in their respective fields are included as well. In the introduction, entitled "Broadly Speaking, Just Who Were the German-Americans," the author examines the data from the thirteen directories in great detail. For example, there are tables dividing the immigrants into areas of origin, and tables exploring dates of immigration. The introduction also attempts to help the reader bridge the linguistic barriers created when reverting American names back to the original German. To this end he has created seven basic rules of name recognition, and has also provided a table listing the twenty-five most common German names and their American English equivalents. The appendices include an abridged glossary of European localities, an every-name index, and three separate bibliographies. Also included is an abridged list of contemporary German-American organizations operating both here and abroad.

"In 1976, interaction between the United States and Germany has probably involved more people and was more frequent than ever before. Germans from all walks of life, individually and in groups, decided to discover and see for themselves the land of unlimited opportunities in which so many of their countrymen have succeeded from its very beginning to the present day. They left behind a distinguished record of accomplishments and gave the best their native country had to contribute to a new nation, in which today twenty-five million profess to be of German ancestry"--Introduction.

This singular account of an estimated 216,000 Germans, mostly newly-arrived immigrants and about 300,000 Americans of German descent, who served in the American Civil War is an unprecedented event in the publication of material on U.S. military history. Written by a successful German immigrant, publishing entrepreneur and journalist, Wilhelm Kaufmann, 1847-1920, this book was originally published in 1911 by Munich Publisher R. Oldenbourg in the German Language only. In their Civil War Centennial book, Civil War Books: A Critical Bibliography, published in 1967, the distinguished contributors, Allen Nevins, James I. Robertson, Jr., and Bell I. Wiley, wrote of Kaufmann's history: Finally, after two world wars and the consequent anti-German sentiment and the neglect that discouraged publication, a new Edition -- in English for the first time -- is now available. Scholars, general readers, genealogists and people who wish to explore their own German heritage will welcome this penetrating account -- now with enhanced features: readable type, larger maps (36 in all) designed for clarity; and now, most importantly, fully indexed for more effective reference use. Available in both a quality genuine clothbound as well as an economical paperback edition, this history deserves a place on your permanent library shelf. 392pp., 36 maps, bibliography, end notes, index.

This is a concise survey of the role that America's largest ethnic group, the German-Americans, has played in American history from the 17th century to the present. The term "German-American" in this volume refers to immigrants and their offspring from Germany, Austria, Switzerland and other German-speaking areas of Europe. Hence, the term "German" is used in a linguistic, cultural and ethnic sense to cover the sum of German-speaking immigrants and their descendants. This study is divided into six parts. Part I, "Immigration and Settlement" traces German-American history from the earliest beginnings into the present time, while Parts II and III demonstrate the role German-Americans have played in "Preserving the Union" and "Building the Nation." Part IV gives an overview of the German-American experience. Part V discusses German-American Heritage Month, and Part VI is a select bibliography. Also includes map that shows percentages of German-Americans in each of the United States, a census table and a fullname index.
