Discover grid computing-how to successfully build, implement, and manage widely distributed computing architecture With technology budgets under increasing scrutiny and system architecture becoming more and more complex, many organizations are rethinking how they manage and use technology. Keeping a strong business focus, this publication clearly demonstrates that the current ways of tying applications to dedicated hardware are no longer viable in today's competitive, bottom line-oriented environment. This evolution in distributed computing is leading a paradigm shift in leveraging widely distributed architectures to get the most processing power per IT dollar. Presenting a solid foundation of data management issues and techniques, this practical book delves into grid architecture, services, practices, and much more, including: * Why businesses should adopt grid computing * How to master the fundamental concepts and programming techniques and apply them successfully to reach objectives * How to maximize the value of existing IT investments The author has tailored this publication for two distinct audiences. Business professionals will gain a better understanding of how grid computing improves productivity and performance, what impact it can have on their organization's bottom line, and the technical foundations necessary to discuss grid computing with their IT colleagues. Following the author's expert guidance and practical examples, IT professionals, architects, and developers will be equipped to initiate and carry out successful grid computing projects within their own organizations.

First International Conference on Data Management in Grid and Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Systems, Globe 2008 Data management can be achieved by different types of systems: from centralized file management systems to grid and P2P systems passing through distributed systems, par- lel systems, and data integration systems. An increase in the demand of data sharing from different sources accessible through networks has led to proposals for virtual data in- gration approach. The aim of data integration systems, based on the mediator-wrapper architecture, is to provide uniform access to multiple distributed, autonomous and h- erogeneous data sources. Heterogeneity may occur at various levels (e. g. , different ha- ware platforms, operating systems, DBMS). For more than ten years, research topics such as grid and P2P systems have been very active and their synergy has been pointed out. They are important for scale d- tributed systems and applications that require effective management of voluminous, distributed, and heterogeneous data. This importance comes out of characteristics offered by these systems (e. g. , autonomy and the dynamicity of nodes, decentralized control for scaling). Today, the grid and P2P systems intended initially for intensive computing and file sharing are open to the management of voluminous, heteroge- ous, and distributed data in a large-scale environment.

Since the 1990s Grid Computing has emerged as a paradigm for accessing and managing distributed, heterogeneous and geographically spread resources, promising that we will be able to access computer power as easily as we can access the electric power grid. Later on, Cloud Computing brought the promise of providing easy and inexpensive access to remote hardware and storage resources. Exploiting pay-per-use models and virtualization for resource provisioning, cloud computing has been rapidly accepted and used by researchers, scientists and industries. In this volume, contributions from internationally recognized experts describe the latest findings on challenging topics related to grid and cloud database management. By exploring current and future developments, they provide a thorough understanding of the principles and techniques involved in these fields. The presented topics are well balanced and complementary, and they range from well-known research projects and real case studies to standards and specifications, and non-functional aspects such as security, performance and scalability. Following an initial introduction by the editors, the contributions are organized into four sections: Open Standards and Specifications, Research Efforts in Grid Database Management, Cloud Data Management, and Scientific Case Studies. With this presentation, the book serves mostly researchers and graduate students, both as an introduction to and as a technical reference for grid and cloud database management. The detailed descriptions of research prototypes dealing with spatiotemporal or genomic data will also be useful for application engineers in these fields.

Grid technology offers the potential for providing secure access to remote services, thereby promoting scientific collaborations in an unprecedented scale. Grid Resource Management: Toward Virtual and Services Compliant Grid Computing presents a comprehensive account of the architectural issues of grid technology, such as security, data management, logging, and aggregation of services, as well as related technologies. After covering grid usages, grid systems, and the evolution of grid computing, the book discusses operational issues associated with web services and service-oriented architecture. It also explores technical and business topics relevant to data management, the development and characteristics of P2P systems, and a grid-enabled virtual file system (GRAVY) that integrates underlying heterogeneous file systems into a unified location-transparent file system of the grid. The book covers scheduling algorithms, strategies, problems, and architectures as well as workflow management systems and semantic technologies. In addition, the authors describe how to deploy scientific applications into a grid environment. They also explain grid engineering and grid service programming. Examining both data and execution management in grid computing, this book chronicles the current trend of grid developments toward a more service-oriented approach that exposes grid protocols using web services standards.

The synergy and convergence of research on grid computing and peer-to-peer (P2P) computing have materialized in the meeting of the two research communities: parallel systems and distributed systems. The main common objective is to harness Internet-connected resources (e.g., CPU, memory, network bandwidth, data sources) at very large scale. In this framework, the Globe Conference tries to consolidate the bidirectional bridge between grid and P2P systems and large-scale heterogeneous distributed database systems. Today, the grid and P2P systems hold a more and more important position in the landscape of the research in large-scale distributed systems, and the applications which require an effective management of voluminous, distributed and heterogeneous data. This importance comes out of characteristics offered by these systems: autonomy and dynamicity of peers, decentralized control for scaling, and transparent sharing large-scale distributed resources. The second edition of the International Conference on Data Management in Grid and P2P Systems was held during September 1-2, 2009 in Linz, Austria. The main objective of this conference was to present the latest results in research and applications, to identify new issues, and to shape future directions.
