Excerpt from Distributive Justice The volume in hand represents an attempt to discuss systematically and comprehensively the justice of the processes by which the product of industry is distributed. Inasmuch as the product is actually apportioned among landowners, capitalists, business men, and labourers, the moral aspects of the distribution are studied with refer ence to these four classes. While their rights and obliga tions form the main subject of the book, the effort is also made to propose reforms that would remove the principal defects of the present system and bring about a larger measure of justice. Excerpt from The Elements of Social Justice The subject of this book is the social application of the ethical principles explained by the writer in The Rational Good. These principles are summarized in Chapter I so as to be intelligible without reference to the preceding work, to which the reader is referred for the fuller state ment of the arguments on which they are based. The treatment as here developed is therefore in form deduc tive, but this is not to say that it is an attempt to apply abstract principles without experience. On the contrary, the only valid principles are those that emerge out of our experience, and the function of the highest generaliza tions is to knit our partial views together in a consistent whole. That our social philosophy must form such a whole and that our social efforts suffer from lack of articulate statement and rational coherence is only too palpable. To promote unity of aim among men of good will and lay a basis of co-operation between those attacking different sides of the social problem is a practical problem of the highest importance. Excerpt from Essays in Social Justice This book is written on the assumption that there is a fixed point outside the ship by which it must steer, that it makes a great deal of difference in which direction we hap pen to be headed, and, moreover, that we must be guided by looking out at this fixed point and not by looking in upon our own consciences, for our consciences may be perverted. Character and conduct either of the individual or the state are thus to be evaluated, not in accordance with their power to please, or to create the sensation of approval within us; but in accordance with their power to propel us in the right direction. What is the right direction is a question of fact and not a question of opinion, of likes and dislikes, or of approval and disapproval by an inner con science. Excerpt from Social Justice a Message to Suffering Humanity When the manuscript of this book came first into my hands, I thought I was destined to peruse a mass of dry arguments that would leave unsolved the momentous problem of social justice. In common with all the world I had recognized that our institutions were wrong somewhere, and that most people's lives were failures - doomed so to be from birth. I had read volumes on social economics and I had heard politicians prophesy the good that was coming to the masses; but the philosophy of all the economists failed to satisfy, just as the promises of the office-seekers failed of realization. Therefore I began reading Jones' "Social Justice" with the feeling that there was nothing in it - that it would fail to satisfy, fail to even suggest any remedy for the wrong conditions that harassed me, in common with the rest of the toiling millions of the earth. I listlessly followed page after page, and at the end of the first chapter said to myself, "This man Jones at least writes sense. I cannot disagree with anything thus far. He proves every point made." So I read on, and gradually it dawned upon me that a new fundamental principle had been found, that the correct thinking and patient plodding of Percy Vivian Jones had enabled him to fathom the causes of the wrongs which civilization has developed, and to point out a reasonable remedy. I am naturally skeptic. I view everything new with distrust. I expect nothing good in a new book, and I seldom find it. Yet, Jones' theories of social justice have captured me completely. I endorse the book from cover to cover. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Social Justice: A Critical Essay The present work lies within a sphere of inquiry to which ethics may perhaps lay the best claim, but to which economics and politics have nevertheless a valid right. While the facts dealt with by the several social sciences are largely the same, they are examined from different points of view. The special task which falls to the ethicist is the determination of the absolute value of social institutions, and the statement in as definite a form as possible of the principles which should govern men in their efforts to adjust their lives to the highest ideals of right and justice. In a certain sense, each social science has thus its own ethic. Each of these separate ethics must, however, rest upon general principles of right, which have first to be determined in the abstract. It is the aim of this volume to ascertain if possible, these general principles. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Social Justice Without Socialism For six months we have been living un der what may be called triumphant democracy, not because the Democratic Party has beaten its rivals and come into control of the Government, but for a much deeper reason, namely, that a de mocracy carried into industrial life is the dominating principle of every political body that can hope for success. Every party must show by its action that it values the man more than the dollar. To this extent we are all democrats and wish the Government to act for the people as well as to be controlled by the people.
