Excerpt from Essays in Social Justice One of the surest signs of degeneration is the growth of sentimental as distinguished from practical morality, especially when it is combined with an ingrowing conscience. Sentimental morality is the sort which evaluates character and conduct by their ability to satisfy an inner sense of propriety, or to create within us the sensation of approval. Both character and conduct, under this system, come under what economists would call "consumers' goods" whose function is to please. Practical morality is the sort which evaluates character and conduct by their results. The test is thus objective and not subjective. "By their fruits ye shall know them" is robust and wholesome doctrine, though even this may be travestied by the defining fruits in subjective terms, under the alluring but delusive name of spiritual goods. An ingrowing conscience is one which leads its possessor to look continually inward upon his own motives and to try perpetually to test them by some supposedly inner knowledge as to what a motive ought to be like. Such a person is like one who would try to guide himself through the world by closing his eyes to the objects around him and following an assumed inner sense of direction. One school would have us believe that this inner knowledge, or intuition, is like the compass which the ship carries in her midst, which points unerringly fixed point outside the ship, and which, accordingly, becomes a safe guide. While the facts dealt with by the several social sciences are largely the same, they are examined from different points of view. The special task which falls to the ethicist is the determination of the absolute value of social institutions, and the statement in as definite a form as possible of the principles which should govern men in their efforts to adjust their lives to the highest ideals of right and justice. In a certain sense, each social science has thus its own ethic. Each of these separate ethics must, however, rest upon general principles of right, which have first to be determined in the abstract. This is particularly true in regard to the restoration of Palestine. It was not enough for land reformers to say that the earth belongs to the human race, that each person has the same right to its use as all others. That might be justice, but it does not accord with human nature. The idea of ownership is too deep rooted to be lightly set aside. Men and women wish to own land, to hold the title to it, to sell it, or to bequeath it. They would own land as they own a house, or furniture, or the clothing on their back. The problem has been to find a way to harmonize the right of all men to all land, and at the same time, to secure the right of the individual to a par ticular piece of land. The author of this booklet seems to me to have found the way by organizing the Zion Commonwealth, Inc., - a company for landpurchase and development in Palestine, based upon a program of social justice. The reader who examines the appendix will see how long a time it has taken for the author's social program to meet with popular approval. [but the splendid Pittsburgh Program, adopted by the Amer ican Zionists in June, 1918 has placed these ideas Within the realm of practical achievement. Stu dents of social science the world over are beginning to take a keen interest in the experiment of a Jew ish Palestine. Those of us who know and under stand Jewish idealism have the right to hope and to expect that the Land of Israel will do its bit towards practical enactment of the laws of social justice.
