Fifteen papers focus on the active and dynamic uses of images during the first millennium AD. They bring together an international group of scholars who situate the period’s visual practices within their political, religious, and social contexts. The contributors present a diverse range of evidence, including mosaics, sculpture, and architecture from all parts of the Mediterranean, from Spain in the west to Jordan in the east. Contributions span from the depiction of individuals on funerary monuments through monumental epigraphy, Constantine’s expropriation and symbolic re-use of earlier monuments, late antique collections of Classical statuary, and city personifications in mosaics to the topic of civic prosperity during the Theodosian period and dynastic representation during the Umayyad dynasty. Together they provide new insights into the central role of visual culture in the constitution of late antique societies.

The Seigneurial Transformation written by Alessio Fiore and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-03-05 with History categories.

In The Seigneurial Transformation, Alessio Fiore discusses the transformation of the fabric of power in the kingdom of Italy in the period between the late eleventh century and the early twelfth century. The study analyses the major socio-political change of this period, the crisis of royal and public structures, and the development of seigneurial powers, using as a starting point the structures of power over men and land, and the discourses about the exercise of local power. This period was marked by a rapid reshaping of the structures of local power; while the outbreak of civil wars in the 1080s did not imply a clear-cut rupture with the past, it led to a staggering acceleration of pre-existing dynamics, with a reconfiguration of the matrix of power, in turn expressed in a transformation both of the instruments of local political communications and of the practices of power.

The Religious World Of Quintus Aurelius Symmachus written by Jill Mitchell and has been published by Trivent Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-12-31 with History categories.

The Religious World of Quintus Aurelius Symmachus examines the religious life of one of the last pagan senators of Rome, dates c. 340-402, who lived in a tumultuous time during the Late Antique period of the Roman Empire, dying just a few years before the Western Empire began to break up. Symmachus could not have imagined the political reality developing so soon after his death, so he is important as a late example of the old Roman Western aristocracy, as well as one of the last pagans of Rome. He was regarded as the foremost orator of his time and was a prolific letter-writer who had correspondents in high places and throughout the Empire. He also filled the posts of Urban Prefect of Rome and Consul - and was the opponent of Bishop Ambrose of Milan during the so-called 384 CE "Altar of Victory Dispute," which was one episode of many leading to the " triumph" of Christianity over traditional Roman polytheism. Symmachus' cache of 900 private letters and his official despatches while Urban Prefect have provided the raw material for this book.

Crossing The Pomerium written by Michael Koortbojian and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-01-21 with Art categories.

"The Romans' early establishment of the sanctity of their city and the desire to protect it -- from not only the ravages of military conflict beyond its confines but the dangers of authoritarian rule at home -- took a variety of forms, legal, political, and military. These were codified in social practices, and thus established behaviors and rituals that, as they set these practices in the public eye, served as a continuing self-justification of Rome's growing dominance in the Mediterranean world. Koortbojian examines the transformation of Rome from Caesar to Constantine from several different points of view to reveal the primordial distinction between matters civic and military, and how the 'crossing of the pomerium,' the evanescent boundary that divided them, provided the crux of a historical interpretation of distinctly Roman endeavors. Koortbojian sets the background and then expands upon the long-vexed problem of the presence of men at arms in the city of Rome; long-standing legal and political practices that were adapted in the face of new military engagements and the crisis of civil war; and how Roman commanders attended to established religious practices while on campaign, and how those practices mirrored traditional customs and inverted the manner of their performance so as to acknowledge a profound Roman distinction between civic and military acts. As a whole, the book demonstrates how certain fundamental principles of law, politics, and military life -- and the practices that followed from them -- were interwoven in a narrative of continuity and change across three centuries of Roman imperial rule"
