This book aims to encourage and develop understanding of the social category of gender, the concept of visual representation, and the relationship between the two, with contributions stimulating discussion within and between disciplines, research paradigms, and methods. By emphasising ‘real world’ issues, drawn from across the globe, the book aims to contribute towards and inspire broader feminist activism. Inviting readers to approach in an interdisciplinary spirit, the contributions suspend assumptions, and ask us to accept conceptual contradictions and tensions as they may arise, aspiring to (re)centre the concept of representation when considering the social category of gender within our dynamic and changing digital age. This book will be of interest to academics, students, and practitioners from a range of disciplines with an interest in gender studies and in particular the visual representation of gender. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Gender Studies.

Diversity Counts written by Anne Dymond and has been published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-06-30 with Art categories.

Despite the common belief that art galleries will naturally become more gender equitable over time, the fact is that many art institutions in Canada have become even less so over the last decade, with female artists making up less than 25 per cent of the contemporary exhibitions of several major galleries. In the first large-scale overview of gender diversity in Canadian art exhibitions, Anne Dymond makes a persuasive plea for more consciously equitable curating. Drawing on data from nearly one hundred institutions, Diversity Counts reveals that while some galleries are relatively equitable, many continue to marginalize female and racialized artists. The book pursues an interdisciplinary approach, considering the art world's resistance to numeric data, discourses on representation and identity, changing conceptualizations of institutional responsibility over time, and different ways particular institutions manage inclusion and exclusion. A thoughtful examination of the duty of public galleries to represent underserved communities, Dymond's study bravely navigates the unspoken criteria for acceptance in the curatorial world. Demonstrating how important hard data is for inclusivity, Diversity Counts is a timely analysis that brings the art world up to date on progressive movements for social transformation.

This cutting-edge reader demonstrates the multiple ways in which the universe of gender is socially, culturally, and historically constructed. The selections focus on gender itself - how gender operates socioculturally, exists, functions, and is presented in micro and macro interactions. In order to avoid balkanization, the authors examine the various ways in which culture intersects with individuals to produce the range of presentations of self that we call 'gender', from people born male who become adult men to lesbian women to transmen, and everyone else on the diverse gender spectrum.

Gender And Popular Culture written by Tara L. Ward and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-12-31 with categories.

Gender and Popular Culture: A Visual Study presents students with a thought-provoking and contemporary collection of readings that question, and even undermine, key binary dichotomies present in Western culture. The readings address three long-standing and pervasive dichotomies: male-female, intellectual-popular, and text-image. Students are encouraged to consider and reconsider cultural classifications, what or who is left out, mismatched, or forced into these groups, and what power differentials exist between them. The collection provides readers with a series of critical tools that allow them to critically examine the ways in which gender functions in contemporary Western, and especially American, culture. The anthology begins with a series of essays that present key theories and provide essential context. Later sections address stereotypes and tropes, the representation of women in media and culture, theories regarding single gender cultures, race and representation, the concept of space in relation to gender, attitudes toward sex, parenting, reactions to feminism, and more. Designed to elicit thoughtful self-reflection and the development of new perspectives, Gender and Popular Culture is a valuable text for courses in popular culture, gender studies, and women's studies. Tara L. Ward holds a Ph.D. from Boston University. She is a lecturer in the History of Art Department at the University of Michigan, where she teaches courses in gender and popular culture, as well as the history and theory of twentieth- and twenty-first-century art and visual culture. Dr. Ward's research interests include the French avant-garde, questions of abstraction, and gender issues.

Gender Diversity written by Serena Nanda and has been published by Waveland Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-01-22 with Social Science categories.

Anthropologist Serena Nanda has heralded the importance of understanding human similarities and differences throughout her writing and teaching career. This was especially evidenced in her groundbreaking work, Gender Diversity: Crosscultural Variations, a masterful, far-reaching examination of the relationships between sex, gender, and sexuality and how they are culturally constructed. Rich ethnographic examples representing nine cultures illuminate the need to analyze sex/gender roles and identities on the basis of broad cultural patterns and distinct cultural features, including social class, ethnicity, age, religion, urban or rural residence, and exposure to Western cultures. The latest edition incorporates new material on hijras in Bangladesh, three gender alternatives in Indonesia, and global changes related to migration, health, and communication. Concept-reinforcing questions have been added to each chapter. Gender Diversity, Second Edition encourages readers to think in new ways about what they consider natural, normal, or morally right. As a concise supplement with multidisciplinary appeal, the enhanced edition is sure to energize the undergraduate classroom.
