We met with people where they live, by traveling to 28 communities across 13 Southern states over the course of a year. We've visited diverse parts of the region, geographically, demographically, and culturally. Along our journey, we've had discussions in many different settings from one-on-one interviews to small groups in roundtables to focus groups to community listening sessions. The capstone of this research is a 1,800-person survey across the states we visited.

This edited book captures salient global security challenges and presents ‘design’ solutions in dealing with wicked problems. Through case studies and applied research this book reveals the many perspectives, tools and approaches to support security design. Security design thereby can support risk and threat analysis, risk communication, problem framing and development of interventions strategies. From the refugee crisis to economic slowdowns in emerging markets, from ever-rising numbers of terrorist and cyberattacks to global water shortages, to the proliferation of the Internet of Things and its impact on the security of our homes, cities and critical infrastructure, the current security landscape is diverse and complex. These global risks have been in the headlines in the last year (Global Risks Report) and pose significant security challenges both nationally and globally. In fact, national security is no longer just national. Non-state actors, cyber NGO, rising powers, and hybrid wars and crimes in strategic areas pose complex challenges to global security. In the words of Horst Rittel (1968):"Design is an activity, which aims at the production of a plan, which plan -if implemented- is intended to bring about a situation with specific desired characteristics without creating unforeseen and undesired side and after effects."

This thoroughly revised book will provide the reader with an understanding of the principles and practices of testing and balancing (TAB) heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) air and water systems. It is for anyone interested in testing and balancing. For the novice and the experienced testing and balancing technician, it is a field reference book of procedures, equations, and information tables. For those interested in getting into TAB or who are new to the HVAC industry, it is a text for learning more about HVAC systems and testing and balancing. For the mechanical engineer, building owner, facility manager, commissioning agency or energy manager, this book can be used for teaching TAB, writing more effective specifications, and learning about TAB and how it interacts with system commissioning, indoor air quality and energy management. It is the intent of this book to improve the communications between owners, mechanical engineers, designers, vendors, contractors, TAB engineers, supervisors, and technicians to ensure that HVAC systems are being thoroughly tested and balanced. This book is used in test and balance self-study courses, in-house training programs, seminars, and other training formats as preparation for TAB certification, and as a text in colleges and technical schools. The sixth edition has general and specific testing and balancing procedures for constant air volume systems, variable air volume systems, return air and exhaust air systems, positive and negative pressure conditioned spaces, and fans and fan performance in Chapters 1 through 9. Chapters 10–12 cover testing and balancing fume hood systems, and cleanrooms and commissioning HVAC systems. Chapters 13 and 14 provide information on water systems and centrifugal pumps including water balancing procedures using flow meters, system components and temperatures, and water pumps and pump performance. Chapter 15 reviews analog and digital controls. Chapters 16–20 cover terminology for fluid flow, psychrometrics, refrigeration ̧ air distribution, water distribution, fans and pumps, motors, electrical, and instrument usage and care. Chapters 21 and 22 are equations and tables.

"In Travel by Design, Boarnet and Crane demonstrate that the influence of the built environment on travel is more complex and misleading than often portrayed, a relationship that reveals predictable patterns and useful policy advice. The authors evaluate design reforms within the range of congestion management and air quality improvement policies, providing both policy advice and the first methodical assessment of the governmental and regulatory challenge of building fewer auto-dependent communities. Overall, the work gives a better understanding of how urban design influences travel behavior, while analyzing the potential for land use planning to address transportation problems."--Jacket.

Pressure Vessel Technology, Volume 3 reviews the practices and trends in pressure vessel technology. This book discusses the tremendous progress in the various fields of pressure vessel technology, including fabrication techniques, ferrous materials, and life expectancy to assure structural integrity. Organized into 11 chapters, this compilation of papers begins with an overview of the fabrication techniques in pressure vessel technology. This text then examines the requirements of the chemical industry for the prevention of catastrophic failure of pressure components. Other chapters consider the major development of pressure vessels for special purposes, high pressure vessels, materials for making pressure vessels, and pressure vessel codes. This book discusses as well the seismic design in the field of pressure vessels and pipings. The final chapter deals with buckling resistance under seismic motions for thin-walled cylindrical vessels, of which predominant mode of failure is shear buckling and bending under horizontal earthquake loadings. This book is a valuable resource for mechanical engineers, project managers, and scientists.

"Books have long been objects of beauty. For many centuries and in societies across the world, bookmakers have lavished great care on the paper, binding materials, and illustrations that surround the words on a page as well as on the lettering or type in which those words appear. This volume, featuring an array of beautiful books from the British Library's collection, focuses on the sensory experience of holding these objects in your hands. Each book represents a specific moment in the development of the object-from scrolls and bound illuminated manuscripts to paperbacks and formatted digital information. The books range from the seventh century to the present and include examples from China, Japan, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East as well as Europe and North America, with separate features on book traditions in Africa and Oceania. Expert curators and other specialists explore these books from the perspective of design and manufacturing, with original art photographs that zero in on their texture and materials as well as graphics that detail their size, number of folios, and other specifications. Offering a wide-ranging look at the creation and use of books, this volume is itself an object of beauty"--
