Le présent ouvrage explore ce qui arrive aux sciences humaines et sociales lorsqu'elles se déplacent ou se « dépaysent » et analyse la façon dont elles sont affectées et transformées en retour, aux plans méthodologique, théorique et conceptuel, par leur extension au-delà de l'aire géographique de leur naissance. Concrètement, il se propose d'examiner les mutations qu'elles subissent - ou dont elles profitent - dans deux cas de figure distincts mais également importants : lorsque des disciplines formées au nord étendent leur validité au-delà de leur aire géographique d'origine pour s'appliquer à des terrains lointains et « exotiques » ; et lorsque ces mêmes disciplines sont enseignées, pratiquées, appropriées et développées dans des aires géographiques autres et des contextes historiques différents. Dans les deux cas, la production « dépaysée » des savoirs peut différer de la pratique « originale », « primitive » ou « domestique », dans laquelle le chercheur et l'objet de sa recherche appartiennent tous deux au contexte historique de formation des sciences sociales. Outre les contenus, il s'interroge aussi sur les pratiques et ceux qui en sont les porteurs, chercheurs ou institutions qui participent au transfert des savoirs ou contribuent à les recombiner et les reformuler. Pour des raisons de compétence et loin de tout présupposé essentialiste, orientaliste ou culturaliste, l'analyse se borne aux savoirs produits sur les pays arabes et la Turquie. Ne pouvant prétendre à l'exhaustivité, l'ouvrage privilégie les évolutions ayant marqué les dernières décennies et, pour des raisons tout aussi pratiques et pragmatiques, il s'intéresse à quatre disciplines en particulier : l'histoire, la sociologie, la science politique et l'économie.
