The Ottoman Canon and the Construction of Arabic and Turkish Literatures fleshes out the Ottoman canon's multilingual character to call for a literary history that can reassess and even move beyond categories that many critics take for granted, such as 'classical Arabic literature' and 'Ottoman literature'. It gives a historically contextualised close reading of works from authors who have been studied as pionneers of Arabic and Turkish literatures, such as Ziya Pasha, Jurji Zaydan, Ma?ruf al-Rusafi and Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar. The Ottoman Canon analyses how these authors prepared the arguments and concepts that shape how we study Arabic and Turkish literatures today as they reassessed the relationship among the Ottoman canon's linguistic traditions. Furthermore, The Ottoman Canon examines the Ottoman reception of pre-Ottoman poets, such as Kab ibn Zuhayr, hence opening up new research avenues for Arabic literature, Ottoman studies and comparative literature.

Elmalılı M. Hamdi Yazır, Hicri 1294 Miladi 1877 yılında Antalya'nın Elmalılı kazasında doğdu. Babası Numan Efendi, aslen Burdur'un Gölhisar kazası Yazır köyü halkındandır. Numan Efendi, küçük yaşta Yazır köyünden çıkıp Elmalı'ya gelmiş, orada okumuş ve "Şer'iye Mahkemesi" başkâtibi olmuştur. Hamdi Efendi'nin annesi, Elmalı âlimlerinden Mehmet Efendi'nin kızı Fatma Hanım'dır. İlkokulu ve bugünkü ortaokula denk sayılan Rüşdiye'yi Elmalı'da bitiren Hamdi Efendi, 1892 yılında, dayısı hoca Mustafa Sarılar ile birlikte İstanbul'a gelmiş ve devrinin âlimlerinden Kayserili Mahmud Hamdi Efendi'den ders almıştır. İstanbul'daki diğer tanınmış hocaların da derslerine devam ettikten sonra, 1906 yılında "Bayezit dersiâmı" olarak icâzet almıştır. Aynı yıl yapılan seçimlerde Antalya Mebusu olmuş ve II. Meşrutiyet'in bu ilk meclisinde, özellikle 1876 "Kanun-i Esâsi"sinin değiştirilmesinde önemli rol oynamıştır. 1909 yılında Mülkiye Mektebi'nde Ahkâm-ı Evkâf ve Arâzî dersleri okutmuş ve yine aynı yıllarda Mekteb-i Kuzâtta "Fıkıh" dersleri vermiştir. Daha sonra Darü'l-Hikmeti'l-İslâmiye (Şeyhü'l-İslâmlığa bağlı Yüksek Müşavere Heyeti) üyeliğine ve bir müddet sonra da başkanlığına tayin edilmiştir. I. Dünya Savaşı'ndan sonra Evkaf Nazırlığı'nda bulunmuş ve bu sırada Âyan Meclisi üyesi olmuştur. Cumhuriyetin ilânı sırasında Mütehassısîn medresesinde mantık müderrisi idi. Medreseler kaldırılınca evinde inzivaya çekilmiş, ilmî tetkik ve araştırmalarına devam etmiştir. Yirmi yıl kadar devam eden bu uzlet (yalnızlık) devresi, "Hak Dini Kur'an Dili" adındaki Türkçe tefsiri hazırlamasına imkân vermiştir. Tefsire başlamadan önce Mısırlı Prens Abbas Halim Paşa'nın teşviki ile "Büyük İslâm Hukuku Kâmusu" ile meşgul bulunuyordu. Bu eserle birkaç yıl meşgul olduktan sonra yarım bırakmış ve tefsiri yazmaya başlamıştır. Âyan üyeliğinin son yıllarında Fransızca'dan tercümeye başladığı bir felsefe tarihi kitabını tamamlayarak ilave ettiği önemli bir dibace (önsöz) ve diğer haşiyelerle birlikte "Metalib ve Mezahib" adıyla bastırmıştır. Hamdi Efendi, ayrıca devrinin güzel sanatlarından olan hat ve mûsikî ile de ilgilenmiştir. Özellikle "Nesih" ve "Sülüs" yazılarda iyi bir hattat idi. Aynı zamanda hâfız olduğu için alaturka mûsikînin çeşitli makamlarıyla ciddi bir şekilde meşgul olmuştur. Hamdi Efendi, 27 Mayıs 1942'de İstanbul Erenköy'de vefat etmiştir.

This is the first volume to offer a critical overview of the long and complicated history of translations of Virgil from the early modern period to the present day, transcending traditional studies of single translations or particular national traditions in isolation to offer an insightful comparative perspective. The twenty-nine essays in the collection cover numerous European languages - from English, French, and German, to Greek, Irish, Italian, Norwegian, Slovenian, and Spanish - but also look well beyond Europe to include discussion of Brazilian, Chinese, Esperanto, Russian, and Turkish translations of Virgil. The Great War was the first example of a total war in history, reflected in the cultures and literatures of Europe in the shape of propaganda. What began as civic patriotism developed into a weapon of war, programmed and organized by the state to devastating effect. In almost all countries, writers of different ideological hues were ready to undertake the job of representing the war, in accordance with the state's guidance. War propaganda in the Ottoman Empire, the most anachronistic belligerent of the war according to historians, was condemned to failure. In the underdeveloped and multi-ethnic Ottoman Empire, the Ottoman-Turkish intelligentsia could not produce adequate propaganda to support the battlefronts and the home front. Why did propaganda efforts die after 1915? Can this be explained with the laziness or cosmopolitanism of the cultural agents? Or did the lack of propaganda derive from reasons that are more material?Erol Koroglu seeks to address these questions in a unique interdisciplinary assessment of Turkish literature and propaganda, interpreting literary texts written by the representative writers of the period. These interpretations follow a literary cultural history method and give an analysis of the complex interaction between literary texts and the historical context. Koroglu discusses the subjects of First World War propaganda, Turkish nationalism and national identity construction. He concludes that the unfavourable conditions in the Ottoman-Turkish cultural sphere, the literature of the years 1914-1918, even if superficially full of propaganda aims, was essentially the continuation of a project to build a national culture, inherited from the pre-war years and never completed. Turkish literature therefore did not reflect powerful propaganda, but was more a difficult attempt to create 'national identity'.

The connection between travel and translation is often evoked in contemporary critical theory, both practices seen as metaphors of mobility and flux linked to globalized 'post-modern' society. Travel is a multiple activity, encompassing temporary and voluntary displacement, repeated movement, exile, economic migration, diaspora. Places of origin are often plural and unstable, in spite of the enduring appeal of traditional labels such as 'mother country' or 'patrie'. The multiple interfaces between translation, travel and migration are the focus of all contributions in this special issue. Starting from different points of view, and using a variety of methodologies, the authors raise fundamental questions about the way in which we perceive the link between language, national or ethnic identity, and individual voice. Topics range from the interaction between travel, travel narratives and translation in early English representations of China, to the special role played by interpreters in mediating the first contact between a literate and a non-literate culture; from the multiple functions and audiences addressed by contemporary Romani literature and its translation, to the political as well a cultural implications of translating popular music across the Bosporus. A number of the articles focus on detailed textual analysis, covering the intersection between exile, self-translation and translingualism in the work of Manuel Puig; the uses and limitations of translation in the works of migrant authors; or the impact on figurations of Europe of experimental work embracing polylingualism.
