Homosexuality And Italian Cinema written by Mauro Giori and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-11-18 with Performing Arts categories.

This book is the first to establish the relevance of same-sex desires, pleasures and anxieties in the cinema of post-war Italy. It explores cinematic representations of homosexuality and their significance in a wider cultural struggle in Italy involving society, cinema, and sexuality between the 1940s and 1970s. Besides tracing the evolution of representations through both art and popular films, this book also analyses connections with consumer culture, film criticism and politics. Giori uncovers how complicated negotiations between challenges to and valorization of dominant forms of knowledge of homosexuality shaped representations and argues that they were not always the outcome of hatred but also sought to convey unmentionable pleasures and complicities. Through archival research and a survey of more than 600 films, the author enriches our understanding of thirty years of Italian film and cultural history.

Born in Ortona in 1846, Francesco Paolo Tosti attended the Conservatory at Naples when he was twelve, and went on to become a gifted violinist and teacher as well as achieving fame as a singer and composer. He lived in Rome (1870-1875) as teacher to Princess Margerita of Savoy before moving to London in 1875 where he was singing master to the children of Queen Victoria. Tosti composed and performed throughout this time. He became closely involved with the Ricordi publishing house, who put out all of Tosti's chamber art songs except for a few released by Chappel and Enoch in England, all of which were extremely successful. In all, some 400 works by Tosti were circulated throughout his life and his popularity continued after his death.

On his way to a linguists' conference in Helsinki, Budai finds himself in a strange city where he can't understand a word anyone says. One claustrophobic day blurs into another as he desperately struggles to survive in this vastly overpopulated metropolis where there are as many languages as there are people. Fearing that his wife will have given him up for dead, he finds comfort in an unconventional relationship with the elevator-operator in the hotel. A suspenseful and haunting Hungarian classic, and a vision of hell unlike any other imagined. 'With time, Metropole will find its due place in the twentieth-century library, on the same shelf as The Trial and 1984.' G.O. Chateaureynaud 'In the same way that Kafka becomes relevant again every time you renew your driver's license, Karinthy captures that enduring, horrifying and exhilarating state of being at the mercy of an unfamiliar land.' The Translingual Imagination written by Steven G. Kellman and has been published by U of Nebraska Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-01-01 with Literary Criticism categories.

It is difficult to write well even in one language. Yet a rich body of translingual literature -- by authors who write in more than one language or in a language other than their primary one -- exists. The Translingual Imagination is a pioneering study of the phenomenon, which is as ancient as the use of Arabic, Latin, Mandarin, Persian, and Sanskrit as linguae francae. Colonialism, war, mobility, and the aesthetics of alienation have combined to create a modern translingual canon. Opening with an overview of this vast subject, Steven G. Kellman then looks at the differences between ambilinguals -- those who write authoritatively in more than one language -- and monolingual translinguals -- those who write in only one language but not their native one. Kellman offers compelling analyses of the translingual situations of African and Jewish authors and of achievements by authors as varied as Mary Antin, Samuel Beckett, Louis Begley, J. M. Coetzee, Joseph Conrad, Eva Hoffman, Vladimir Nabokov, and John Sayles. While separate studies of individual translingual authors have long been available, this is the first in-depth study of the general phenomenon of translingual literature.

The Etruscans were the most important--and remarkable--of the peoples who inhabited early Italy. But when the Romans gained supremacy, the distinctive Etruscan culture gradually disappeared. This masterly re-creation of the lives of a now-forgotten people lifts the veil from every aspect of their civilization--origins, language, religion, and art.
