Il volume – che esce in occasione dei cento anni dallo scoppio della Rivoluzione russa (1917-2017) – intende prendere di nuovo in considerazione il comunismo, non solo dal punto di vista della storia politica, ma, più in generale, come fenomeno culturale e spirituale della civiltà europea del XX secolo. Per fare, come è necessario, pienamente i conti con il comunismo, non si può prescindere da un riesame approfondito di ciò che i curatori chiamano nell’Introduzione il “pregiudizio positivo” di cui esso ha goduto e continua a godere nel mondo della politica e della cultura del Vecchio Continente. Diventa quindi sempre più impellente rispondere alla questione: perché il comunismo ha sedotto l’intelligenza e l’immaginario di milioni di persone, nonostante gli esiti tragici ai quali il più delle volte ha condotto e il continuo fallimento di ogni progetto sociale ed economico che si era posto? A questa domanda hanno cercato di rispondere alcuni docenti dell’Università di Teramo e di altre sedi accademiche, provenienti da settori scientifici differenti, secondo un approccio interdisciplinare. Attraverso la storia degli eventi politici, lo studio del diritto e le analisi politologiche e filosofiche, gli autori del volume hanno contribuito, nel loro insieme, ad elaborare delle chiavi interpretative in grado di affrontare le implicazioni teoriche e pratiche di un’ideologia come il marxismo-leninismo, le logiche totalitarie che hanno dominato gli ordinamenti del “socialismo reale” e il ruolo dei molteplici fattori (sociali, religiosi ecc.) che li hanno portati al collasso tra gli anni ottanta e novanta del novecento. Ad un livello più profondo, però, la domanda capitale verte su quella forma mentis utopistica e costruttivistica, dominante nella tarda modernità, che ancora ai nostri giorni continua ad influenzare la vita culturale e istituzionale dell’Europa.

This book examines how left-wing political and cultural movements in Western Europe have considered Jews in the last two hundred years. The chapters seek to answer the following question: has there been a specific way in which the Left has considered Jewish minorities? The subject has taken various shapes in the different geographical contexts, influenced by national specificities. In tandem, this volume demonstrates the extent to which left-wing movements share common trends drawn from a collective repertoire of representations and meanings. Highlighting the different aspects of the subject matter, the chapters in this book are divided in three parts, each dedicated to a major theme: the contribution of the theorists of Socialism to the Jewish Question; Antisemitism and its representations in left-wing culture; and the perception of the Arab-Israeli conflict. There have been quite a lot of attempts to find out exactly what the impact of the Cold War on the Middle East was, and this from different disciplinary perspectives. This volumes tries to integrate the historical debate with new fresh insights thanks to the works of young scholars who are currently engaged in archival and field research. Algeria, Sudan, Jordan as well as Syria, Israel and Iran during the embattled 1950s and 1960s are the objects of this volume, which draws a much more complicated picture than one might expect. As a matter of fact, both the Cold War superpowers and their European allies proved constrained in their interventions to shape the political and economic dynamics of the region according to their own plans: on the contrary, Middle Eastern rulers enjoyed remarkable autonomy to achieve their goals, and fully exploited, in rhetorics and practice, the competition and rivalry which divided the industrial countries during the Cold War. The process of decolonization and the related construction of new patterns of national sovereignty and development were major issues at stake for both the Cold War camps and their postcolonial partners in the Middle East. Though peculiar, the region proved to be no exception to global trends. The so called “liberal” Fifties as well as the “radical” Sixties of the XXth century were times of great conflict and change, setting much of the institutions and patterns of development which lasted for three decades, at least, but also providing fresh opportunities for new social and politics groups to emerge and consolidate in power. In light of the current events in North Africa and the Middle East at large, this volume is a highly valuable contribution to the deeper and wider understanding of the region in itself as well as the patterns of its integration within the wider, global world

Less than Nations: Central-Eastern European Minorities after WWI represents the result of research that the author has carried over recent years, and was facilitated by the 2008 PRIN project (Programmi di Ricerca di Rilevante Interesse Nazionale) and the 2010 Sapienza Research funds. The book analyses the conditions of national minorities after World War I, when the geo-political map of Central-Eastern Europe was redefined by international diplomacy. The new settlements were based on the principle of national self-determination and were conditioned by the geographic reality of Central-Eastern Europe, where states and nations rarely coincided. As a consequence, the minority question emerged as one of the most troublesome issues during the interwar period, and affected international relations and the internal conditions of many states. The minority question was discussed by historiography and by international observers, and became an integral part of the system which was centred around the League of Nations. This work begins with the study of the relationships between the states and their minorities, and of the international dimension of this question, which animated the fight between revisionist and anti-revisionist states. The documents of the Italian Army’s General Staff and of the League of Nations represent the main historical sources of this book, which carries out a complete study of the difficult situation of 1918–1920, when the new states annexed many “contested regions” within their frontiers, and of the numerous controversies concerning the application of international treaties and national regulations in relation to the protection of minorities. The second volume of the book analyses some special aspects of this question and focuses on the interpretation of some particular cases, which had an outstanding role in the definition of the international framework. The massacres of the Armenians in the Ottoman Empire and of the Jews in Eastern Europe, for example, alarmed the international community and contributed to the 1919 “emergency” of minority rights. The role of Kin States such as Germany and Hungary, instead, characterized the entire interwar period and conditioned the stability of Europe and the League of Nations. Finally, special cases like those of Slovakia and Bosnia are also helpful in understanding the ideas of nation and minority, and how conceptualisations of the latter have changed throughout the last century.
