C'è dunque un punto su cui il pensiero religioso e quello scientifico concordano: come dimostra l'esperienza quotidiana di ciascuno di noi, la stupidità - ovvero l'incapacità di interpretare lucidamente la realtà, e di reagire in maniera adeguata alle diverse evenienze - è comunissima e pervade ogni ambito, dalla filosofia alla finanza, dall'amore alla pubblicità. Per difendersi da questo pericoloso fenomeno, occorre riconoscerlo tempestivamente e saperlo classificare. Ecco perché Piergiorgio Odifreddi ci offre questo utilissimo dizionario (talvolta necessariamente alquanto impertinente) in cui, con logica sempre stringente, smaschera molte fra le più fastidiose manifestazioni di stupidità. Spaziando tra scienza, cultura, attualità e vita di ogni giorno, ci parla di medicina e vaccini, rilegge autori classici da Dante a Sartre, ci mette in guardia dalle assurdità del politically correct e ci insegna a prendere le distanze da ciarlatani e fattucchiere (ma anche dai banchieri). Forse è troppo pensare (e sarebbe stupido!) che un libro possa rendere più intelligenti. Certo è però che la lettura dei lemmi di questo dizionario, brevi eppure sempre profondi, stuzzica lo spirito critico e ci invita a usare più attivamente il cervello.

The famed linen cloth preserved in Turin Cathedral has provoked pious devotion, scientific scrutiny, and morbid curiosity. Imprinted with an image many faithful have traditionally believed to be that of the crucified Christ "painted in his own blood," the Shroud remains an object of intense debate and notoriety yet today. In this amply illustrated volume, John Beldon Scott traces the history of the unique relic, focusing especially on the black-marble and gilt-bronze structure Guarino Guarini designed to house and exhibit it. A key Baroque monument, the chapel comprises many unusual architectural features, which Scott identifies and explains, particulary how the chapel's unprecedented geometry and bizarre imagery convey to the viewer the supernatural powers of the object enshrined there. Drawing on early plans and documents, he demonstrates how the architect's design mirrors the Shroud's strange history as well as political aspirations of its owners, the Dukes of Savoy. Exhibiting it ritually, the Savoy prized their relic with its godly vestige as a means to link their dynasty with divine purposes. Guarini, too, promoted this end by fashioning an illusionary world and sacred space that positioned the duke visually so that he appeared close to the Shroud during its ceremonial display. Finally, Scott describes how the additional need for an outdoor stage for the public showing of the relic to the thousands who came to Turin to see it also helped shape the urban plan of the city and its transformation into the Savoyard capital. Altre datazioni hanno riportato l’origine della Sindone all’epoca di Cristo. Dove è stata conservata prima della sua comparsa in Europa? Gli autori sono risaliti fino al misterioso panno chiamato Mandylion, nascosto a Edessa, una città nel sud-est dell’attuale Turchia: molti indizi permettono di dedurre che fosse in realtà la Sindone! Questo libro vuole essere dunque un viaggio avventuroso attraverso le ricerche storiche e scientifiche condotte sulla Sindone, per capire ciò che ormai è stato appurato e affacciarsi sulla soglia dei misteri ancora da svelare; un viaggio durante il quale le scoperte sorprendenti che vi attendono non vi deluderanno. Si ripercorrono i primi secoli alla ricerca di indizi della sua esistenza e si confronta l’analisi dell’impronta lasciata dal cadavere con ciò che è noto dalle fonti romane sulla crocifissione e dai Vangeli sul momento della deposizione del corpo di Gesù nel sepolcro. Così che il viaggio si conclude nel luogo da cui è partito. Un’inchiesta lucida, documentata e appassionante.
