Diplomarbeit aus dem Jahr 2005 im Fachbereich Medien / Kommunikation - Multimedia, Internet, neue Technologien, Note: 2,0, Universität Wien (Institut für Publizistik und Kommunikationswissenschaft), Veranstaltung: Diplom, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Es wird davon ausgegangen, dass DJ-Kultur ein hybrides, popkulturelles Phänomen darstellt, welches mit der Erfindung des Radio-Apparates begonnen hat. Durch die Verbreitung neuer Technologien haben sich aber auch für DJs neue Tätigkeitsfelder entwickelt, und sie bereichern zusätzlich zum traditionellen Medium Radio auch die globale Internet-Radiolandschaft. Der theoretische Rahmen meiner Diplomarbeit ist das Umfeld der "Cultural Studies". Als Ausgangsbasis dienen die Anfänge der Birminghamer "Subkulturschule" im direkten Vergleich mit Postsubkulturtheorien. ". Im Rahmen des "Cultural Studies"-Kontexts wird auch die Rolle des DJs als Meinungsbildner, Künstler, Star und Lehrender untersucht. Die von mir für die Untersuchung des Gegenstandes angewandte Methode stellt das Experteninterview dar. Die Methodik orientiert sich an Lamneks „Qualitativer Sozialforschung“, sowie Bogners/Menzs „Experteninterview“. Zu Kreis der Experten zählen Personen, die im Umfeld als „DJ“ oder im Radio als Redakteur DJ-zentrierter Sendungen arbeiten, sowie Personen aus dem Cultural Studies-Umfeld. Durch die zunehmende Technologisierung wird sich die DJ-Kultur weiterhin wandeln und anpassen. Als Abschluss der Arbeit möchte ich ausgehend von meinen Forschungsfragen die Hypothesen generieren. 1. DJ-Kultur ist ein hybrides, popkulturelles und globales Phänomen, welches sich durch die Entwicklung neuer Technologien ständig weiterentwickelt. 2. Der DJ von heute hat dabei verschiedene Funktionen. Er kann Opinion Leader, Star, Künstler oder Lehrender sein. 3. DJ-Kultur ist ein wesentlicher Teil der Clubkultur und ist neben dem Club vorwiegend in auditiven Medien wie z.B. dem Radio vertreten. Die Funktionen eines Radio-DJs und eines Club-DJs unterscheiden sich voneinander. 4. Durch die zunehmende Verbreitung neuer Technologien haben sich auf für den DJ neue Tätigkeitsfelder entwickelt. Zahlreiche Internet-Radiostationen werden ins Leben gerufen und ergänzen (bzw. komplementieren) die globale Medienlandschaft. 5. Die Authentizität der DJs, die in sogenannten „Nischen“- und „Mikromedien“ agieren, ist innerhalb der Club-Kultur größer als in „Massenmedien“.

HipHop-Kultur ist global: In jeder Sprache wird gerappt, gesampelt wird alles, von Soul Funk Breaks über Klassik bis hin zum folkloristischen Bläsersatz und auf Youtube tanzen B-Boys aus der ganzen Welt vor Wänden voller Graffiti.Ausgehend von den frühen HipHop-Performances im New York der Siebziger untersucht der Autor die Entstehung der kulturspezifischen Körpertechniken im Kontext der elektronischen Medien und zeigt, wie Unterwanderungen technischer Konventionen die spätere Wanderung dieser Kulturpraxis und ihre lokale Reproduktion initiieren. Aus der Selbstinszenierung einer lokalen Gegenkultur wird im globalen Kontext eine Kultur der Selbstinszenierung, deren Widerstand sich nicht gegen ein kulturell Anderes, sondern gegen eine andere Kultur des Medialen richtet. Die Arbeit erklärt die medialen Dynamiken der Anfänge der HipHop-Kultur.

Seit Jahrzehnten beschleunigen sich die Entwicklungsdynamiken digitaler Technologien und digitalisierter Kultur eher, als dass sie sich beruhigen. Forschung zur Digitalisierung, insbesondere in Feldern ästhetischer Praxen und kultureller Bildung, hat es mit einem ausgesprochen fluiden Gegenstandsbereich zu tun. Auf dem Markt werden immer neue MusikmachDinge angeboten, um eventuell kurz darauf wieder zu verschwinden. Gleichwohl prägen sie die Aneignungsvorgänge, Praxis und Ästhetik ganzer Musikkulturen. Die Herausforderungen für Forschung sind entsprechend nicht gering: In gegenstandsbezogener Perspektive muss der erkundende und forschende Blick sich immer wieder neu justieren – gerade in Bezug auf Künste und ästhetische Praxen, die selbst Digitalisierungsprozesse immer stärker thematisieren und in ihrer Form reflektieren. In methodologischer und methodischer Perspektive bedarf es der Entwicklung neuer, den (post-)digitalen Praxen angemessener Forschungsweisen. Die vorgestellten Studien zeigen auf, inwiefern erst die Kombination aus „Gegenständen“ oder Dingen, seien sie physischer, kulturtechnischer, technologischer, konzeptioneller und/oder sozial-kultureller Natur, den Zugang und damit auch die Rolle menschlicher Akteur*innen in den jeweiligen Handlungszusammenhängen formt. Die im Buch versammelten Forschungszugänge reichen von symmetrisch-soziomateriellen Konstellationen bis hin zu dezentriertheitssensiblen, wissenssoziologisch fundierten Blickweisen auf (Sozio-)Materialität. Dabei geht es um inhaltliche Aspekte von Design und Produktion, Wissen und Bildung sowie Konsumtion, Prosumtion und Nutzung.

How sonically distinctive digital “signatures”—including reverb, glitches, and autotuning—affect the aesthetics of popular music, analyzed in works by Prince, Lady Gaga, and others. Is digital production killing the soul of music? Is Auto-Tune the nadir of creative expression? Digital technology has changed not only how music is produced, distributed, and consumed but also—equally important but not often considered—how music sounds. In this book, Ragnhild Brøvig and Anne Danielsen examine the impact of digitization on the aesthetics of popular music. They investigate sonically distinctive “digital signatures”—musical moments when the use of digital technology is revealed to the listener. The particular signatures of digital mediation they examine include digital reverb and delay, MIDI and sampling, digital silence, the virtual cut-and-paste tool, digital glitches, microrhythmic manipulation, and autotuning—all of which they analyze in specific works by popular artists. Combining technical and historical knowledge of music production with musical analyses, aesthetic interpretations, and theoretical discussions, Brøvig and Danielsen offer unique insights into how digitization has changed the sound of popular music and the listener's experience of it. For example, they show how digital reverb and delay have allowed experimentation with spatiality by analyzing Kate Bush's “Get Out of My House”; they examine the contrast between digital silence and the low-tech noises of tape hiss or vinyl crackle in Portishead's “Stranger”; and they describe the development of Auto-Tune—at first a tool for pitch correction—into an artistic effect, citing work by various hip-hop artists, Bon Iver, and Lady Gaga.

Existing books on the analysis of popular music focus on theory and methodology, and normally discuss parts of songs briefly as examples. The impression often given is that songs are being chosen simply to illuminate and exemplify a theoretical position. In this book the obverse is true: songs take centre stage and are given priority. The authors analyse and interpret them intensively from a variety of theoretical positions that illuminate the song. Thus, methods and theories have to prove their use value in the face of a heterogeneous, contemporary repertoire. The book brings together researchers from very different cultural backgrounds and encourages them to compare their different hearings and to discuss the ways in which they make sense of specific songs. All songs analysed are from the new millennium, most of them not older than three years. Because the most widely popular styles are too often ignored by academics, this book aims to shed light on how million sellers work musically. Therefore, it encompasses a broad palette, highlighting mainstream pop (Lady Gaga, Ke$ha, Lucenzo, Amy McDonald), but also accounting for critically acclaimed ’indie’ styles (Fleet Foxes, Death Cab for Cutie, PJ Harvey), R&B (Destiny’s Child, Janelle Monae), popular hard rock (Kings of Leon, Rammstein), and current electronic music (Andrés, Björk).
