Neben der Funktion der Musikreferenz soll beantwortet werden, auf welche Art und Weise Musik in der Popliteratur eingesetzt wird und ob die Verwendung innerhalb der Popliteratur einheitlich verläuft oder variiert. In Kapitel eins werden Pop, Popliteratur und Intermedialität definiert. Im nächsten Schritt wird anhand des „Handbuch[s] für Literatur & Musik“ von Nicola Gess und Alexander Honold der aktuelle Forschungsstand von intermedialer Referenz von Musik in Literatur herausgestellt. Besonders im Fokus stehen hier die Methoden des „showing“ und „telling“. Im Anschluss daran werden zwei der bedeutendsten Werke der Popliteratur auf diese Methoden der Intermedialität hin untersucht. „Soloalbum“ von Benjamin von Stuckrad-Barre und „Rave“ von Rainald Goetz werden als zwei Vertreter ihrer Gattung gegenübergestellt und in ihrer Verwendung hinsichtlich Musik verglichen. Die Popliteratur ist eine moderne Literaturgattung, deren Ursprung in den 1950er Jahren liegt. Sie weist ein hohes Maß an Aktualität auf, da immer noch neue Werke ihrer bekanntesten Popautoren veröffentlicht werden. Die Popliteratur ist jedoch nur eine Teilströmung des Pop. Das wohl noch bekanntere und kommerziellere Medium des Pop ist die Popmusik. Die beiden Medien stehen jedoch nicht nur für sich allein, sondern werden oft intermedial zueinander referenziert.

This essay collection embarks on a historical voyage into the idea of the West, while contextualising its relevance to the contemporary discourses on cultural difference. Although the idea of the West predates both colonial and Orientalist projects, it has been radically reshaped by the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the end of the Cold War and the 9/11 attacks. In the wake of these developments, this collection attends to the nebulous paradigm shifts that account for a reconfiguration of the conventional coordinates of the West (West vs. Rest, Orient vs. Occident). The essays featured in this collection draw upon a wide range of theories from a comparative perspective. Am Ende der 1970er Jahre entstand ein ästhetisch-subjektkulturelles Konzept in der deutschsprachigen Pop-Musik, das alles ‚Kalte‘ affirmierte: ‚Kälte-Pop‘. Bands wie Kraftwerk, DAF und Einstürzende Neubauten entwickelten als Gegenentwurf zum pop- wie gegenkulturell hegemonialen Wärme-Kult ein System von Motiven und Strategien, das all jene Zeichen und Prozesse der (Post-)Moderne ästhetisierte und glorifizierte, die in der bundesdeutschen Gesellschaft und vor allem im linksalternativen Milieu als negative Aspekte einer vermeintlich kalten Welt interpretiert wurden: Gefühlslosigkeit und Dehumanisierung, Industrie und Großstadt, Künstlichkeit und Entfremdung, Disziplin und körperliche Funktionalität, Schnee und Eis, Beton und Stahl sowie Computer, Maschinen und Roboter. Dabei schlugen die ‚Kälte‘-Akteur:innen eine Brücke zu den Historischen Avantgarden der 1920er Jahre und inszenierten sich stereotypisch als ‚kalte Deutsche‘. Die Arbeit analysiert unter Einbeziehung der transnationalen Verknüpfungen die ‚Kälte-Welle‘ (1978–1983) in der deutschen Pop-Musik, ihre Bildwelten und Codes, historischen Bezüge und Rezeption, das historische Umfeld ihrer Entstehung sowie nachfolgende Erscheinungsformen ‚kalter‘ Musik, die sich bis heute in der internationalen Pop-Musik und bei Acts wie Rammstein zeigen.
