One of the oldest living Holocaust survivors recounts her family’s imprisonment at Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen—and the extraordinary bond with her mother that ultimately saved her life—in this moving memoir of love, loss, courage, and hope. “I only survived because of my mother's love.” When German soldiers invaded Poland in September 1939, a six-year journey began for then ten-year-old Renee Salt and her mother, Sala. Until their liberation in 1945, Renee and Sala were imprisoned in ghettos and concentration camps, including Auschwitz-Birkenau and Bergen-Belsen. The only light in the darkness and brutality for Renee was the unwavering grasp of her mother’s hand in hers—enduring, against all odds. It was this unbreakable bond, along with a few miracles, that kept Renee alive. Sala’s staggering courage to defy the will of SS guards saved both her and her daughter from the gas chambers, and the pair survived the deadliest days in Auschwitz’s history. After suffering the nightmarish conditions at Bergen-Belsen, Renee and her mother were liberated in April 1945. To this day, Renee attributes her survival to the love and bravery of her beloved mother. Do Not Cry When I Die is an incredibly moving and deeply crucial book that tells the shocking story of one of the oldest Auschwitz-Birkenau and Bergen-Belsen survivors—and the mother’s love that saved her life.

The studies in this volume show how speech practices can be understood from a culture-internal perspective, in terms of values, norms and beliefs of the speech communities concerned. Focusing on examples from many different cultural locations, the contributing authors ask not only: 'What is distinctive about these particular ways of speaking?', but also: 'Why - from their own point of view - do the people concerned speak in these particular ways? What sense does it make to them?'. The ethnopragmatic approach stands in opposition to the culture-external universalist pragmatics represented by neo-Gricean pragmatics and politeness theory. Using "cultural scripts" and semantic explications - techniques developed over 20 years work in cross-cultural semantics by Anna Wierzbicka and colleagues - the authors examine a wide range of phenomena, including: speech acts, terms of address, phraseological patterns, jocular irony, facial expressions, interactional routines, discourse particles, expressive derivation, and emotionality. The authors and languages are: Anna Wierzbicka (English), Cliff Goddard (Australian English), Jock Wong (Singapore English), Zhengdao Ye (Chinese), Catherine Travis (Colombian Spanish), Rie Hasada (Japanese) and Felix Ameka (Ewe). Taken together, these studies demonstrate both the profound "cultural shaping" of speech practices, and the power and subtlety of new methods and techniques of a semantically grounded ethnopragmatics. The book will appeal not only to linguists and anthropologists, but to all scholars and students with an interest in language, communication and culture.

My book is about a man in his seventies who thought he had found lasting love, but it was just his thought, not a reality, and how he dealt with the pain of being rejected; things that shape our lives. My life is now shaped in my seventies by the difficult changes I wrote about in my book and have made me a better man.

As Christians today we need to enter into dialogue with the context of the world of which generation we are. The Four gospel evangelists present to us, the Jesus who always engages his contemporary in an intelligent conversation not only on matters of faith and morals but on the entire existential life situations of the people at his time. In the constant conversation between Jesus and his major interlocutors: the scribes, the Pharisees and/or the Sadducees, Jesus demonstrates and establishes that Christianity should have the nature of a rational/intelligent faith and morals not an irrational/blind faith and moral. Whenever we fail as Christians to act or react to the realities of our world with a rational or intelligent faith and moral attitude we always end up not only becoming inhuman, cruel, exploitative, manipulative and hypocritical like the scribes and the Pharisees of Jesus time; but we also become predators, persecutors, fanatics, enemies and killers of gifted and ingenious people in the name of God. We become stagnant and remain in the past, making Christianity unattractive, sterile and a gathering of people of weak minds, who nourish themselves with fables and superstitions. Thus, Christianity would be erroneously conceived as an enemy to science, enemy to technological advancement, enemy to politics, enemy to Economic growth and entire human development and societal advancements. This rational-faith attitude is what this book attempts to expose and invite everyone to have for a better and richer Christian experience in our informative explosive generation.
