Geographical scale is a central concept enabling us to make sense of the world we inhabit. Amongst other things, it allows us to declare one event or process a national one and another a global or regional one. However, geographical scales and how we think about them are profoundly contested, and the spatial resolution at which social processes take place – local, regional or global – together with how we talk about them has significant implications for understanding our world. Scale provides a structured investigation of the debates concerning the concept of scale and how various geographical scales have been thought about within critical social theory. Specifically, the author examines how the scales of the body, the urban, the regional, the national, and the global have been conceptualized within Geography and the social sciences more broadly. The first part of the book provides a comprehensive overview of how different theoretical perspectives have regarded scale, especially debates over whether scales are real things or merely mental contrivances and/ or logical devices with which to think, as well as the consequences of thinking of them in areal versus in networked terms. The subsequent five chapters of the book then each takes a particular scale: the body; the urban; the regional; the national; the global and explores how it has been conceptualized and represented discursively for political and other purposes. A brief conclusion draws the book together by posing a number of questions about scale which emerge from the foregoing discussion. The first single-author volume ever written on the subject of geographical scale, this book provides a unique overview in pushing understandings of scale in new and original directions. The accessible text is complimented by didactic boxes, and Scale serves as a valuable pedagogical reference for undergraduate and postgraduate audiences wishing to become familiar with such theoretical issues.

Inspired by Brown University’s beloved course—The Entrepreneurial Process—Danny Warshay’s See, Solve, Scale is a proven and paradigm-shifting method to unlocking the power of entrepreneurship. The Entrepreneurial Process, one of Brown University’s highest-rated courses, has empowered thousands of students to start their own ventures. You might assume these ventures started because the founders were born entrepreneurs. You might assume that these folks had technical or finance degrees, or worked at fancy consulting firms, or had some other specialized knowledge. Yet that isn’t the case. Entrepreneurship is not a spirit or a gift. It is a process that anyone can learn, and that anyone can use to turn a problem into a solution with impact. In See, Solve, Scale, Danny Warshay, the creator of the Entrepreneurial Process course and founding Executive Director of Brown’s Center for Entrepreneurship, shares the same set of tools with aspiring entrepreneurs around the world. He overturns the common misconception that entrepreneurship is a hard-wired trait or the sole province of high-flying MBAs, and provides a proven method to identify consequential problems and an accessible process anyone can learn, master, and apply to solve them. Combining real-world experience backed by surprising research-based insights, See, Solve, Scale guides the reader through forming a successful startup team and through the three steps of the process: find and validate a problem, develop an initial small-scale solution, and scale a long-term solution. It also details eleven common errors of judgment that entrepreneurs make when they rely on their intuition and provides instruction for how to avoid them. Leveraging Warshay’s own entrepreneurship successes and his 15 years of experience teaching liberal arts students, See, Solve, Scale debunks common myths about entrepreneurship and empowers everyone, especially those who other entrepreneurship books have ignored and left behind. Its lasting message: Anyone can take a world-changing idea from conception to breakthrough entrepreneurial success.

#1 bestselling author and acclaimed venture capitalist John Doerr reveals a sweeping action plan to conquer humanity's greatest challenge: climate change. In 2006, John Doerr was moved by Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth and a challenge from his teenage daughter: "Dad, your generation created this problem. You better fix it." Since then, Doerr has searched for solutions to this existential problem-as an investor, an advocate and a philanthropist. Fifteen years later, despite breakthroughs in batteries, electric vehicles, plant-based proteins and solar and wind power, global warming continues to get worse. Its impact is all around us: droughts, floods, wildfires, the melting of the polar ice caps. Our world is squarely in a climate crisis and on the brink of a climate disaster. Yet despite our state of emergency, climate change has yet to be tackled with the urgency and ambition it demands. More than ever, we need a clear course of action. Fueled by a powerful tool called Objectives and Key Results (OKRs), SPEED & SCALE offers an unprecedented global plan to cut greenhouse gas emissions before it's too late. Used by Google, Bono's ONE foundation and thousands of startups the world over, OKRs have scaled ideas into achievements that changed the world. With clear-eyed realism and an engineer's precision, Doerr identifies the measurable OKRs we need to reduce emissions across the board and to arrive by 2050 at net zero-the point where we are no longer adding to the heat-trapping carbon in the atmosphere. By turns pragmatic and inspiring, SPEED & SCALE intersperses Doerr's wide-ranging analysis with firsthand accounts from Jeff Bezos, Christiana Figueres, Al Gore, Mary Barra, Bill Gates, and other intrepid policy leaders, entrepreneurs, scientists and activists. This book is a launchpad for leaders of all kind, for anyone anywhere who can move others to act with them. With a definitive action plan, the latest science and a rising climate movement on our side, we can still reach net zero before it is too late. But as Doerr reminds us, there is no more time to waste. ________________ 'A critical blueprint for anyone looking to take concrete steps to reach net-zero emissions.' Scientific research uses concepts (or constructs) and requires means to measure them. Often latent, abstract and not directly observable, these concepts demand special attention. When facing problems related to their operationalization, considerable efforts are required to construe measures that effectively represent the phenomena studied. Measurement in Marketing presents a wide range of ideas to help researchers in the selection, design and validation of measurements of constructs. It analyzes the provisions that must be implemented to allow the transition from a latent conceptual construct to an operational level close to reality, and thus to make possible a fluid, reliable and valid reading of the phenomena observed. This instructive book guides readers through all stages of the implementation of a measure. It is intended for a wide audience, offering examples, summary tables and boxes in order to emphasize the primary information.

Life Beyond The Scale written by Benjamin Lee and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-12-14 with categories.

It has no emotions, but it can control yours. It has no voice, but it can control how you speak to yourself. It has no eyes but can make you feel like it''s looking inside your soul. It''s always available to give you some attention, but it should rarely be paid attention to. You can stand on it with all your might, but it will often make you feel really weak. Do you know what I''m referring to? I''m talking about the dreaded scale! It''s incredible how this small device can have so much control over us. Depending on what the three digits are they can make a grown person cry! Have you ever struggled with the scale? Do you find yourself constantly drawn to it? Do you see yourself scared to get on it? Do you feel like you always need to know how much you weigh? Are you a SCALE-O-HOLIC, as one of my friends, described herself? If that''s you, then it''s time to go BEYOND THE SCALE!For me, the scale has brought about a lot of stress. In fact, in 2016 I had two scales in my bedroom. My wife never used either of them. They were both for me. I know, I know, that sounds crazy, right? Well, it was. I had become so paranoid about where my weight was, and I wanted to be sure I had an accurate reading. I was measuring my success in the wrong way, as so many people often do. That''s because as a society we''ve been conditioned to focus solely on the scale.Watch television shows that deal with weight loss, and you will see that it''s all about the scale. From the time we are born, we are put on the scale. While our childhood eventually comes to an end, our connection with the scale doesn''t. It''s time for us to lay aside the SCALE. It''s time to start living beyond the SCALE. I''ve heard a lot of people talk about their relationship with their scale. Some people I think spend more time on their scale than they do in the gym. I''ve heard things like..."I weigh myself four times a day...""I weigh myself twice a week..."I''ve even heard people use profanity when talking about the scale. WOW. Don''t do that. A small little device can really do a number on our psyche. What about you? Are you ready to go beyond the SCALE? Let''s go!What I hope to accomplish with this book is to help you to break the vicious cycle of measuring your self-worth and accomplishments based upon what a stupid scale says to you. You are not a three-digit number. Don''t let a number define who you are. It''s not about the scale. While many people are seeking validation from the scale, what we need to be more concerned about is really living, and finding self-worth in the fact that we are made in the image of God.So let''s make an agreement. Don''t get on the scale again until you have finished this book and the journal at the end (don''t skip ahead and look either). Breathe now, please. I promise it will be okay if you don''t weigh yourself for a few days. Ok, it will be more than a few days. More like a month or so. It will not take too long to read this. However, the journal at the end is where you may have the biggest challenge. But it will be worth it. As my friend Matt Bassford once said, "Some things are worth struggling through." I believe that when you are finished with this book, you will see it''s not about the scale. You will have changed your mindset, which will allow you to lay aside the scale. There are some critical thoughts that I believe will help you to accomplish this.1.We need to know why we should lay aside the scale.2.We need to understand what it is that keeps us shackled to the scale. 3.What it will require for us to go beyond the scale. Are you ready? Then let''s go. Now you may be thinking, "Why should I listen to you?" Great question. I am not a doctor. I am not a nutritionist. You should always consult with a professional before beginning any program. But I have had my struggles with weight in the past. I have been able to successfully transform my body. I''ve learned a lot along the way which I believe will be able to assist you in your journal.

The Voltage Effect written by John A List and has been published by Penguin UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-02-03 with Business & Economics categories.

'By far the best book I've ever read on the how and why of scaling. If you care about changing the world, or just want to make better decisions in your own life, The Voltage Effect is for you.' Angela Duckworth, CEO of Character Lab and New York Times bestselling author of Grit ________________ Why do some ideas make it big while others fail to take off? According to award-winning behavioural economist John List, the answer comes down to a single question: Can the idea scale? Countless enterprises fall apart the moment they scale; their positive results fizzle, they lose valuable time and money, and the great electric charge of potential that drove them early on disappears. In short, they suffer a voltage drop. Yet success and failure are not about luck - in fact, there is a rhyme and reason as to why some ideas fail and why some make it big. Certain ideas are predictably scalable, while others are predictably destined for disaster. In The Voltage Effect, University of Chicago economist John A. List explains how to identify the ideas that will be successful when scaled, and how to avoid those that won't. Drawing on his own original research, as well as fascinating examples from the realms of business, government, education, and public health, he details the five signature elements that cause voltage drops, and unpacks the four proven techniques for increasing positive results - or voltage gains - and scaling great ideas to their fullest potential. By understanding the science of scaling, we can drive change in our schools, workplaces, communities, and society at large. Because a better world can only be built at scale. ________________ 'One of the best economics books I have ever read - and an instant classic in behavioral economics.' Cass R. Sunstein, Robert Walmsley University Professor, Harvard University, and New York Times bestselling co-author of Nudge 'Thought-provoking and engaging. A must-read.' Daron Acemoglu, Institute Professor at MIT and co-author of Why Nations Fail and The Narrow Corridor.
