For three decades, state-sponsored short filmmaking educated Danish citizens, promoted Denmark to the world, and shaped the careers of renowned directors like Carl Th. Dreyer. The first book-length study in English of a national corpus of state-sponsored informational film, this book traces how Danish shorts on topics including social welfare, industry, art and architecture were commissioned, funded, produced and reviewed from the inter-war period to the 1960s. Examining the life cycle of a representative selection of films, and discussing their preservation and mediation in the digital age, this book presents a detailed case study of how informational cinema is shaped by, and indeed shapes, its cultural, political and technological contexts.

Gardasil is a vaccine that protects women against human papillomavirus, or HPV, a common sexually transmitted disease that can give rise to cervical cancer. It's also the subject of hot debate both in the United States and abroad. After being approached by a young woman who linked a crippling illness to her recent vaccination, Danish journalists Michael Bech Nielsen and Signe Walgren Daugbjerg decided to dig deeper--and they were astounded by what they found. Their 2015 documentary "The Vaccinated Girls" gave voice to roughly thirty women who suffered side effects coinciding with their inoculation. Doctors who had treated the women also came forward, explaining that the link between their vaccination and symptoms like dizziness, chest pain, and fainting was too strong to ignore--and reaching some frightening conclusions. The documentary also exposed government officers' caginess regarding the vaccine's dangers and admissions that they quashed evidence. Once the documentary aired, more victims came forward in droves--leading the European Medicines Agency to launch a safety review of three common anti-HPV vaccines. The Vaccinated Girls features expanded interviews with and updates from the physicians, European government officials, victims, and families featured in the documentary. In asking what we're not supposed to ask in the United States, The Vaccinated Girls sheds light on just how many questions remain unanswered. Anyone interested in the state of vaccination will want to read this groundbreaking work.

A vast collection of documents that illuminate one of the most sophisticated acts of collective slave resistance in the history of the U.S. In 1822, thirty-four slaves and their leader, a free black man named Denmark Vesey, were tried and executed for "attempting to raise an insurrection" in Charleston, South Carolina. In The Denmark Vesey Affair, Douglas Egerton and Robert Paquette annotate and interpret a vast collection of contemporary documents that illuminate and contextualize this complicated saga, providing the definitive account of a landmark event that played a role in the nation’s path to Civil War. The editors ultimately argue that the Vesey plot was one of the most sophisticated acts of collective slave resistance in the history of the United States. A volume in the series Southern Dissent, edited by Stanley Harrold and Randall M. Miller Publication of the paperback edition made possible by a Sustaining the Humanities through the American Rescue Plan grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Censured by Apple and Facebook; this is the documentary book about the great Danish hippie experiment of the summer of 1970, written by award-winning author Peter Øvig. The book was removed from the iBook store and App Store because of photographs of naked or partly dressed hippies taken forty years ago. Since then, Facebook has also censured the images. The photographs, which were taken by some of Denmark’s leading photographers, went around the world. In this abbreviated English version of the two volume series, an international audience is now able to read the story behind the photographs. Day by day and in both text and images, the book follows the hippies in their attempt at creating a new society without leaders and laws in a deserted stretch of land in northern Denmark. The experiment ended in a violent clash with the local population. The book includes a preface on the Danish Case, as the EU parliament calls the censorship case.

Nordic Film Cultures and Cinemas of Elsewhere introduces a new concept to Nordic film studies as well as to other small national, transnational and world cinema traditions. Examining overlooked 'elsewheres', the book presents Nordic cinemas as international, cosmopolitan, diasporic and geographically dispersed, from their beginnings in the early silent period to their present 21st-century dynamics. Exploring both canonical works by directors like Ingmar Bergman and Lars von Trier, as well as a wide range of unknown or overlooked narratives of movement, synthesis and resistance, the book offers a new model of inquiry into a multi-varied Scandinavian cultural lineage, and into small nation and pan-regional world cinemas.
