This volumes includes almost one hundred ancient documents from the ancient Near East that have relevance for the study ancient Israel and the Hebrew Bible. It includes more than twenty photos of these documents, a newly updated bibliography, and a new foreword. The aim throughout the volume has been to relate each document as closely as possible to the Old Testament, and to bring out relevant points of interest touching history, chronology, archaeology, religion, literature, geography, and so on, in illustration of the Old Testament. Not all Israel's story is told in the Old Testament. It has to be supplemented by the evidence of ancient documents discovered by archaeologists--inscriptions on clay, stone, seals and coins, and writings on potsherds, papyrus and leather. Some part of this story it is the purpose of this volume to tell. . . . While Israel is not without her testimony to herself, it is for the most part the witness of her neighbours which is met with in the pages of this volume. --from the Preface

The Old Testament Documents written by Walter C. Kaiser and has been published by IVP this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with Religion categories.

Can we trust the accounts found in the Old Testament? Are they historically reliable? Are these ancient documents at all relevant to people in the information era of the twenty-first century? These are important questions for all who believe that Christianity is a religion founded on events that took place in space-time history, indeed for all who care about truth and meaning in life. In this thought-provoking book Walter C Kaiser Jr. makes the case that the Old Testament documents are both historically reliable and personally and socially relevant. He begins in part one by looking at the origins of the Old Testament books and how well their texts were preserved. Then in part two he explores Old Testament history, giving special attention to details in the book of Genesis and the patriarchal narratives. Similarly, he gives close attention to the events and historical synchronisms for the kings of Judah and Israel. In part three he surveys the larger questions of the trustworthiness and authority of the various genre in the Old Testament-historical narrative, wisdom and prophecy. Finally, in part four Kaiser probes the relevance of the Old Testament for Christian faith today, once again addressing each genre present. In an epilogue he asks and answers the questions, What is the Old Testament all about? Readers will also find a helpful glossary of terms at the back.

Yahweh written by G.H. Parke-Taylor and has been published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-01-01 with Religion categories.

Biblical tradition asserts that the revelation of God to Moses in the burning bush involved also a declaration of the divine name, the Tet (represented by the letters Y, H, W, H), and its meaning. There are indications that the divine name was known prior to the time of Moses, although ultimate questions of origin and precise meaning are shrouded in obscurity. IN fact, even the exact pronunciation of the name (usually pronounced YAHWEH) is by no means certain. The author of The Divine Name in the Bible surveys the immense literature on this subject, and traces the use of various names for deity in Israel from patriarchal times onwards, with special attention to the significance of the Tetragrammaton, which in course of time, became the name by which the God of Israel was known. Various aspects of the theological meaning of the name in the Old Testament writings are explored. The Dead Sea Scrolls, the Jewish Talmudic literature, and later mystical writings are also examined. The translators of the Old Testament into Greek used Kyrios as the equivalent for YHWH—with implications for the New Testament understanding of the person of Jesus Christ, reflected also in subsequent Christological formulations.

"The links between archaeology and the Bible have fascinated generations of archaeologists and biblical scholars who seek documentation of events narrated in the Bible. The British Museum's collections include numerous inscribed objects, scripts and pictorial reliefs which provide such evidence. There is, for example, a Babylonian clay tablet which records Nebuchadnezzar's siege of Jerusalem in 597 BC, as narrated in the book of Jeremiah. For this book the author has selected over seventy such 'documents', mainly from Western Asia, with some examples included from Greece, Egypt and Asia Minor, dating from the period of the Patriarchs to the New Testament times, c. 2000 BC to c. AD 100. He transliterates and translates the ancient texts, which include Cuneiform, Aramaic and Hebrew, and discusses the contribution they make to our knowledge of the culture and history of biblical times. Each object is illustrated in black and white."--Back cover.

The two volume authoritative guide to the social teaching of the Catholic Church. This first volume covers the period from Genesis to Centesimus Annus - Biblical times to the late nineteenth century. There has been a social teaching in the Judaeo-Christian tradition from the beginning, and it has continued to develop in the Christian tradition through the social witness and teaching of the Church through to the present time. Here is the Christian experience from Apostolic times, through the witness of the early Church Fathers and then Christendom in the Middle Ages, and the periods of absolutisms, imperialisms and revolutions in the early modern and modern world down to the end of the nineteenth century. Rodger Charles, S.J. has been researching, lecturing and writing in London, Oxford and San Francisco for over forty years.
