Philip Doddridge (1702-51) pastored a sizeable evangelical congregation in Northampton, England, and ran a training academy for Dissenters which prepared men for pastoral ministry. Offering a fresh look at Doddridge’s thought, the book provides a criticial examination of the accepted view that Doddridge was influenced in his thinking primarily by Richard Baxter and John Locke. Exploring the influence of other streams of thought, from John Owen and other Puritan writers to Samuel Clarke and Isaac Watts, as well as interaction with contemporaries in Dissent, the book shows Doddridge to be a leader in an evangelical Dissent which was essentially Calvinistic in its theology, adapted to the contours and culture of its times.

This book treads new ground by bringing the Evangelical and Dissenting movements within Christianity into close engagement with one another. While Evangelicalism and Dissent both have well established historiographies, there are few books that specifically explore the relationship between the two. Thus, this complex relationship is often overlooked and underemphasised. The volume is organised chronologically, covering the period from the late seventeenth century to the closing decades of the twentieth century. Some chapters deal with specific centuries but others chart developments across the whole period covered by the book. This publication is the first survey of Jonathan Edwards's harmonic interpretation of Epistle to the Hebrews. This methodology emphasized harmony between the history of the world and its account in the Word. Drawn from a planned publication on The Harmony of the Old and New Testament, the harmonic interpretation of Jonathan Edwards sought to harmonize the Old and New Testament by employing three habits: (1) the habit of observing Old Testament prophetic fulfillment in the person and work of Christ in the New Testament; (2) the habit of perceiving typology in the natural world and Scripture that typified the Messiah, Jesus Christ; (3) the habit of harmonizing the Old and New Testament according to its doctrines and precepts. After introducing this methodology to readers, this study provides eight thematic case studies on how Edwards demonstrated this methodology in his interpretation of the Epistle to the Hebrews.

This book sheds light on the career of Samuel Prideaux Tregelles, and in doing so touches on numerous aspects of nineteenth-century British and European religious history. Several recent scholars have celebrated the 200th anniversary of the German textual critic Tischendorf but Tregelles, his contemporary English rival, has been neglected, despite his achievements being comparable. In addition to his decisive contribution to Biblical textual scholarship, this study of Tregelles’ career sheds light on developments among Quakers in the period, and Tregelles’s enthusiastic involvement with the early nineteenth-century Welsh literary renaissance usefully supplements recent studies on Iolo Morganwg. The early career of Tregelles also gives valuable fresh detail to the origins of the Plymouth Brethren, (in both England and Italy) the study of whose early history has become more extensive over the last twenty years. The whole of Tregelles’s career therefore illuminates neglected aspects of Victorian religious life.
