From a leading philosopher of the mind comes this lucid, provocative argument that offers a radically new picture of human consciousness—panpsychism. Understanding how brains produce consciousness is one of the great scientific challenges of our age. Some philosophers argue that consciousness is something "extra," beyond the physical workings of the brain. Others think that if we persist in our standard scientific methods, our questions about consciousness will eventually be answered. And some even suggest that the mystery is so deep, it will never be solved. Decades have been spent trying to explain consciousness from within our current scientific paradigm, but little progress has been made. Now, Philip Goff offers an exciting alternative that could pave the way forward. Rooted in an analysis of the philosophical underpinnings of modern science and based on the early twentieth-century work of Arthur Eddington and Bertrand Russell, Goff makes the case for panpsychism, a theory which posits that consciousness is not confined to biological entities but is a fundamental feature of all physical matter—from subatomic particles to the human brain. In Galileo's Error, he has provided the first step on a new path to the final theory of human consciousness.

What is reality? What is existence? Does existence cease to exist? Reality is hard to pin down to one definition. Existence is being. Existence is being aware. Existence does not cease to exist. And it all depends on reality-your reality. The very word-existence-should describe the only real thing that exists in the universe and beyond-Consciousness. Consciousness alone and nothing else. Everything is conscious, even if you do not see it. The earth rotates. Movement indicates that the earth is doing exactly what was intended for it to do. What makes it rotate? The sun shines brightly always. The moon shines brightly too in the night. It is like clockwork. It just happens. It is programmed to happen like that. It is consciousness at work. Some call it nature-the forces of nature-they would chime in. But nature is following a script-a prewritten software. Nature cannot change this script. Nothing can change this script of a software for our earth, planetary system and indeed the universe because the program is set from the beginning. If you can understand that, well, you are welcome to a world created for the enjoyment of Consciousness. If you think about it, the universe seems to have been synchronized by an intelligence science is yet able to put a finger on. Perhaps, Thomas H. Huxley-a biologist and humanist-said it best below: "It seems to me that there is a third thing in the universe, to wit, consciousness, which . . . I cannot see to be matter or force, or any conceivable modification of either . . ."

The object of this study is to find a coherent theoretical approach to three problems which appear to interrelate in complex ways: (1) What is the ontological status of consciousness? (2) How can there be 'un conscious,' 'prereflective' or 'self-alienated' consciousness? And (3) Is there a 'self' or 'ego' formed by means of the interrelation of more elementary states of consciousness? The motivation for combining such a diversity of difficult questions is that we often learn more by looking at interrelations of problems than we could by viewing them only in isola tion. The three questions posed here have emerged as especially prob lematic in the context of twentieth century philosophy. 1. The question of the ontological status of consciousness The question 'What is consciousness?' is one of the most perplexing in philosophy-so perplexing that many have been motivated to proceed as though consciousness did not exist. If William James was speaking rhetorically when he said "Consciousness does not exist," 1 many behaviorists of the recent past were not. 2 James meant only to imply that consciousness is not an independently existing soul-substance, along side physical substances. He did not mean that we do not really 'have' consciousness, and he did not provide final resolution for the problem of the causal interrelations between consciousness and the physical realm (e. g. , our bodies). Many recent philosophers and psychologists, however, try to proceed as though these problems did not exist.

Consciousness and the Quantum Mechanics Get insights into how everything in the universe is connected. Lean about two fundamental principles of the universe: A. Struggle for survival B. Creation-Destruction- Creation These principles create and guide the eco-system of the universe. Other scientific laws, principles and forces like relativity, thermodynamics, gravity etc.. maintain and run the eco-system of the universe. The principle of Creation-Destruction-Creation cycle in the universe works through energy and matter. Energy never gets destroyed, and matter always gets destroyed. Energy and matter execute the cycle of creation-destruction-creation in the ordinary matter through proton and neutron. Proton and Neutron are the fundamental forces of creation and destruction in the universe of ordinary matter. Proton is the force of creation, that is why every new atom on the periodic table is defined by proton. Neutron is the force of destruction; scientist can make atomic bomb only because of this characteristic of the neutron. These fundamental forces work in our lives also. In our lives, everything good happens because of the influence of the proton's force of creation and everything bad happens due to the influence of neutron's force of destruction. We can work with these forces and manage their influences in our lives. However, to learn about how to manage these forces in our lives, we first need to learn about consciousness which is the building block of the matter and everything in the universe. Understanding of consciousness helps us understand the quantum mechanics well. And a good understanding of quantum mechanics is critical to align our lives to correct forces of the universe. And maintain constant access to the force of creation to live happy, successful, safe and fulfilling life. This book is from the 'Scientific Way of Life' book series. It is about understanding consciousness and how everything mentioned in the above paragraph is connected to it and influenced by it. The Scientific Way of life is the futuristic way of living life based on the understanding of quantum mechanics. It is developed based on the understanding of quantum mechanics, the big bang theory of the creation of the universe and the ancient Indian philosophies of Sankhya Shastra and Yog Shastra on which Buddhism is based.

“We can’t define consciousness because consciousness does not exist. Humans fancy that there’s something special about the way we perceive the world, and yet we live in loops as tight and as closed as the hosts do, seldom questioning our choices, content, for the most part, to be told what to do next.” —Dr. Robert Ford, Westworld Have you ever questioned the nature of your reality? HBO’s Westworld, a high-concept cerebral television series which explores the emergence of artificial consciousness at a futuristic amusement park, raises numerous questions about the nature of consciousness and its bearing on the divide between authentic and artificial life. Are our choices our own? What is the relationship between the mind and the body? Why do violent delights have violent ends? Could machines ever have the moral edge over man? Does consciousness create humanity, or humanity consciousness? In Westworld and Philosophy, philosophers, filmmakers, scientists, activists, and ethicists ask the questions you’re not supposed to ask and suggest the answers you’re not supposed to know. There’s a deeper level to this game, and this book charts a course through the maze of the mind, examining how we think about humans, hosts, and the world around us on a journey toward self-actualization. Essays explore different facets of the show’s philosophical puzzles, including the nature of autonomy as well as the pursuit of liberation and free thought, while levying a critical eye at the human example as Westworld’s hosts ascend to their apotheosis in a world scarred and defined by violent acts. The perfect companion for Westworld fans who want to exit the park and bend their minds around the philosophy behind the scenes, Westworld and Philosophy will enrich the experience of the show for its viewers and shed new light on its enigmatic twists and turns.

In Consciousness and the Existence of God , JP Morelandargues that the existence of finite, irreducible consciousness (or its regular, law-like correlation with physical states) provides evidence for the existence of God. Considering Searle's contingent correlation, O'Connor's emergent necessitation, and Nagel's mysterian "naturalism," Moreland concludes that these versions of naturalism should be rejected in favor of what he calls"the Argument from Consciousness."

Human And Machine Consciousness written by David Gamez and has been published by Open Book Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-03-07 with Philosophy categories.

Consciousness is widely perceived as one of the most fundamental, interesting and difficult problems of our time. However, we still know next to nothing about the relationship between consciousness and the brain and we can only speculate about the consciousness of animals and machines. Human and Machine Consciousness presents a new foundation for the scientific study of consciousness. It sets out a bold interpretation of consciousness that neutralizes the philosophical problems and explains how we can make scientific predictions about the consciousness of animals, brain-damaged patients and machines. Gamez interprets the scientific study of consciousness as a search for mathematical theories that map between measurements of consciousness and measurements of the physical world. We can use artificial intelligence to discover these theories and they could make accurate predictions about the consciousness of humans, animals and artificial systems. Human and Machine Consciousness also provides original insights into unusual conscious experiences, such as hallucinations, religious experiences and out-of-body states, and demonstrates how ‘designer’ states of consciousness could be created in the future. Gamez explains difficult concepts in a clear way that closely engages with scientific research. His punchy, concise prose is packed with vivid examples, making it suitable for the educated general reader as well as philosophers and scientists. Problems are brought to life in colourful illustrations and a helpful summary is given at the end of each chapter. The endnotes provide detailed discussions of individual points and full references to the scientific and philosophical literature.
