This book contains an analysis of the theories of emigration, immigration and integration, an exploration of Turkish labour migration to Germany, an investigation of Germany's immigration and integration policies, and an empirical study into the integration of Turkish immigrants in Germany. The question addressed in the empirical study is: 'Have Turkish immigrants integrated into Germany (during 1961-2007) and has their integration had any impact on bilateral relations, either positively or negatively?' The study explores the factors which facilitate or hinder the integration process of Turkish immigrants, and aims to contribute to an enhanced public understanding of social, economic and political questions relating to the integration of Turkish immigrants living in Germany. The study investigates Turkish immigrants' integration level into Germany through a semi-structured questionnaire which is 5 point-scaled and contains 30 questions. These questions span four areas: economic life, social life, political life and personal life.

"From the influx of immigrants in the 1950s to contemporary worries about refugees and terrorism, The Crisis of Multiculturalism in Europe examines the historical development of multiculturalism on the Continent. Rita Chin argues that there were few efforts to institute state-sponsored policies of multiculturalism, and those that emerged were pronounced failures virtually from their inception. She shows that today's crisis of support for cultural pluralism isn't new but actually has its roots in the 1980s. Chin looks at the touchstones of European multiculturalism, from the urgent need for laborers after World War II to the public furor over the publication of The Satanic Verses and the question of French girls wearing headscarves to school. While many Muslim immigrants had lived in Europe for decades, in the 1980s they came to be defined by their religion and the public's preoccupation with gender relations. Acceptance of sexual equality became the critical gauge of Muslims' compatibility with Western values. The convergence of left and right around the defense of such personal freedoms against a putatively illiberal Islam has threatened to undermine commitment to pluralism as a core ideal. How can we all manage to live together in superdiversity? This book wants to redefine the deadlocked ideological debate about the desirability (or otherwise) of a multicultural society. Furthermore, as «intercultural competencies developed in certain hospitals and schools have clearly shown, there are other, much more effective strategies for treating differences in a favourable light which make social rights more accessible to all. These alternative approaches can effectively help to foster social cohesion only if migrants themselves are committed to them, in particular as recognised political players in the European public arena.
