It is often assumed that the law and religion address different spheres of human life. Religion and ethics articulate complex systems of moral reasoning that concern norms, deliberation of ends, cultivation of disposition, and transformation of moral agency. Law, in contrast, seeks to govern human conduct through procedural justice, rights, and public good. Doing Justice to Mercy challenges this assumption by presenting the reader with an urgent conversation between the law and religion that yields a constructive approach, both theoretically and practically, to the complex role of mercy in our legal process. Authored by legal practitioners, activists, and theorists in addition to theologians and ethicists, the essays collected here are informed by timeless principles, and yet they could not be timelier. The trend in sentencing moves toward an increased severity, and the number of incarcerated people in the United States is at an all-time high. In the half-decade since 9/11, moreover, homeland security has established itself as a permanent fixture in our lives. In this atmosphere, the current volume seeks initially to clarify how justice and mercy intertwine in relation to a number of issues, such as rehabilitation, the death penalty, domestic violence, and war crimes. Exploring the legal, philosophical, and theological grounds for mercy in our courts, the discussion then moves to the practical ways in which mercy may be implemented. Christians are more aware than ever of problems concerning injustice. How are we to respond? Can one person make a difference? The Bible's teachings are just as valid--and radical--today as they were centuries ago. They instruct us to live as lights in the darkness, and they reveal the true source of our hope for the world.

Rethinking Ministry to the Poor The urban landscape is changing and, as a result, urban ministries are at a crossroads. If the Church is to be an effective agent of compassion and justice, we must change our mission strategies. In this compelling book, Lupton asks tough questions about service providing and community building to help us enhance our effectiveness. Among the questions; What dilemmas do caring people encounter to faithfully carry out the teachings of Scripture and become personally involved with the least of these? What are some possible alternatives to the ways we have traditionally attempted to care for the poor? How do people, programs and neighborhoods move toward reciprocal, interdependent relationships? To effect these types of changes will require new skill sets and resources, but the possibilities for good are great.

Renowned pastor and bestselling author of The Prodigal Prophet Timothy Keller shares his most provocative and illuminating message yet. It is commonly thought in secular society that the Bible is one of the greatest hindrances to doing justice. Isn’t it full of regressive views? Didn’t it condone slavery? Why look to the Bible for guidance on how to have a more just society? But Timothy Keller challenges these preconceived beliefs and presents the Bible as a fundamental source for promoting justice and compassion for those in need. In Generous Justice, he explores a life of justice empowered by an experience of grace: a generous, gracious justice. This book offers readers a new understanding of modern justice and human rights that will resonate with both the faithful and the skeptical.

The Urban Ministry Institute (TUMI) is a ministry of World Impact, Inc. TUMI Satellites are a part of the TUMI Network, where leaders are developed in the local church using TUMI's curriculum and training system. As disciples of Christ in the city, we are responsible to display the life of the Kingdom to come in the midst of our churches and through our lifestyles and ministries of compassion to others. This module, Doing Justice and Loving Mercy: Compassion Ministries, highlights the ways in which we both conceive and practice justice and righteousness in the body of Christ and in the world. As ambassadors of Christ, it is critical that we understand the richness of the biblical insights around this subject, as well as explore the possible ways in which we as believers and Christian ministers can demonstrate the love and justice of the Kingdom where we live. We begin our study by defining the concept of the world from a biblical point of view, and assess the different ways in theological tradition that church/world relationships have been understood in the history of the Church. We see how the notion that all human beings are made in the image of God (imago Dei) can greatly empower us to take seriously our obligation to do justice and love mercy in our urban communities. We also consider the priority of demonstrating justice and mercy in the Church of Christ and to those who are outside the faith. The Church serves both as the locus (place) of God's working as well as the agent (ambassador) through whom he works. This course provides a simple yet effective approach Christians can use to organize as we seek the Lord's will to minister mercy and justice in our urban neighborhoods. We illustrate this kingdom theology by calling city believers to live as world Christians striving to think globally but acting locally. We briefly cover several contemporary issues of ethical significance for urban believers: the issues of poverty and oppression, the protection of the environment, the oft-misunderstood notion of diversity, and finally the themes of violence and war.

Divine Mercy And Divine Justice Why Both Are Essential To A Catholic Understanding Of God written by Robert Stackpole Std and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-09-24 with Religion categories.

Dr. Stackpole blends together the results of careful reasoning and sensitive attention to the revelation of God, and addresses in a way that may help many with the huge deceptions that are weakening the faith, morality and mission of God's people today. Although the book is academically sound it is written in such a way that the educated Catholic can certainly understand the flow of his argument and greatly benefit from it. He addresses the tough questions: "If God is so merciful, why is there a hell?" "Why was the horrible death of Jesus Christ by crucifixion necessary for our salvation?" "Why do we shy away from facing the truth of the need for punishment - the penal dimension - for our sins?" This is a book that was written with careful attention to the truth and a deep concern for the salvation of souls. It is also a book that took courage to write and for that we are all in Dr. Stackpole's debt. (Ralph Martin, STD, Pres. Renewal Ministries).
