Since China entered the post-Mao "Reform Era" in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Chinese economy has taken off as few economies ever have. Labor migration, rural enterprises, rising production, and globalization have all combined to end the isolation of the Chinese countryside. Yet although China's unsurpassed economic boom has produced reams of impressive statistics, has this economic growth led to improving the livelihood of the average Chinese person? Has development accompanied economic growth? Has the promise of "opening to the outside" been fulfilled in providing a better life for China's 1.2 billion-plus people? In this book, which is based on field work, Guldin presents and explores some of the changes sweeping through China in the 1990s that are affecting hundreds of millions of people. Guldin looks at the growth of town and village enterprises, labor mobility, and the other aspects of rural urbanization to investigate the connection between economic growth and development in contemporary China. The political changes at the village level, the swelling flows of capital, data, goods, and people, new ways of thinking and behaving, and a significant surge in social inequalities are all topis for chapter discussions. Guldin invites readers to face the same question that former Chinese peasants must face, namely, how to respond, as their villages are transformed forever.

Rescue the perishing Care for the dying Duty demands it This is a motivational message for those called by God to save our dying churches. We are called to serve We are called to save! The Devil Made Them Do it at Tiny Town Church is a true story about how Satan and his band of devils infiltrated a major denomination and one of the small membership churches in its charge and attempted to dismantle and destroy the church, its mission and vision, its pastor, and its congregation. It isnt just about a set of specific circumstances in one small place. It tells a greater story; it tells the continuing saga of humanity at its worst. The story at the Tiny Town Church just happens to express itself through this one small place and the things that happen when people lose their focus on God and focus, instead, on themselves and their own agendas. The lessons that were learned from the Tiny Town experience show us that this is a problem that knows no denominational boundary. For where the Holy Spirit is alive in the people of God, there will be evil trying to destroy their good fruits! Wake up! Spread the Word! Satan is real! He is alive! He wants nothing more than to destroy the worship of our Lord. What better place to start than in the small membership church? Who is sitting in the pew next to you?

Doing The Town written by Catherine Cocks and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-09-19 with History categories.

Tourists and travelers in the early nineteenth century saw American cities as ugly spaces, lacking the art and history that attracted thousands to the great cities of Europe. By the turn of the century, however, city touring became popular in the United States, and the era saw the rise of elegant hotels, packaged tours, and train travel to cities for vacations that would entertain and edify. This fascinating cultural history, studded with vivid details bringing the experience of Victorian-era travel alive, explores the beginnings of urban tourism, and sets the phenomenon within a larger cultural transformation that encompassed fundamental changes in urban life and national identity. Focusing mainly on New York, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and Chicago, Catherine Cocks describes what it was like to ride on Pullman cars, stay in the grand hotels, and take in the sights of the cities. Her evocative narrative draws on innovative readings of sources such as guidebooks, travel accounts, tourist magazines, and the journalism of the era. Exploring the full cultural context in which city touring became popular, Cocks ties together many themes in urban and cultural history for the first time, such as the relationships among class, gender, leisure, and the uses and perceptions of urban space. Offering especially lively reading, Doing the Town provides a memorable journey into the experience of the new urban tourist at the same time as it makes a sophisticated contribution to our understanding of the urban and cultural development of the United States.
