Sejatinya, buku ini dibuat tidak secara khusus untuk para pembuat film di lingkungan industri media televisi, tapi buku ini pun dimaksudkan bisa dinikmati oleh para penggiat film dokumenter dari kalangan non-industri media televisi. Karena itu, saya mencoba menuliskan pengetahuan tentang program dokumenter kali ini dengan agak berteori, sambil mengimbanginya dengan cerita-cerita dari lapangan yang lebih bernuansa praktisi. Dengan harapan, seluruh uraian tersebut bisa dinikmati oleh kalangan mana pun. Banyak uraian yang menghadirkan pergerakan pesan-pesan film dokumenter yang kian ―seksi‖, dalam artian, tidak lagi sekadar rekaman-rekaman bertutur tentang estetisme alam atau budaya ala travelog, tapi menguat pada pesan-pesan yang bersifat persuasif dan propaganda. Terlebih lagi untuk situasi Amerika Serikat yang seakan sangat merasakan betul manfaat persuasif dan propaganda ini. Film De Antonio karya Emile de Antonio yang diilhami politik Marxis dan kritik intelektual terhadap kemunafikan Amerika bisa menjadi contoh kasus. Contoh paling baru, saya tidak akan mengabaikan film-film karya sutradara kontroversial Michael Moore melalui Roger and Me (1990), Bowling for Columbine (2002), hingga Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004), yang cukup dikenal oleh khalayak di tanah air. Kata kunci ―persuasif‖ dan ―propaganda‖ menjadi catatan penting dari uraian ini sebagai benang merah untuk menjumpai film-film yang merepresentasikan penanda-petanda kuasa hegemonik (dominasi secara budaya) media dokumenter.
