Thank You For Letting Me Be Myself written by Mark Jason Murray and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-09 with categories.

As a dancer, singer, comedian and filmmaker, Rudy Ray Moore teetered on obscurity his entire life. Finally, with the creation of his "Dolemite" character and the release of several controversial and groundbreaking hit comedy albums and films during the 1970's, Moore achieved his short-lived success. As the decades changed and he struggled to survive, Moore's influence fueled a new generation of fans and artists who would help resurrect his career. He would become known as the "King of the Party Records" and the "Godfather of Rap," influencing comedians, musicians and pop culture even after his passing. His tenacity and drive were so inspiring, a part of his story was the basis for the hit Netflix film, Dolemite is My Name, starring Eddie Murphy as Rudy Ray Moore.Throughout his life, Rudy remained a very private person. He would end his live performances by commenting to the crowd, "Thank you for letting me be myself!" This phrase was chosen as this book's ironic title as Moore was far removed from his public persona, and personal details of his life were rarely shared. Many people, including those closest to Moore, believed they knew him well, yet the complete and detailed story of his life remained untold.Thank You For Letting Me Be Myself reveals Moore's unknown origins as he escaped poverty and abuse to enter the world of show business. Every period of his life and career is discussed in tremendous detail, with great effort made to place everything into proper historical and cultural context. Speculations will be cleared and truths will be told through the controversial last year of his life and beyond.Inspiration. Icon. Legend. This is the story of Rudy Ray Moore.

" . . . a rare combination of inclusiveness and honesty. . . . cogent introduction[s] . . . confirm the central point of the tales: a search for cultural identity and freedom. First-rate." —Library Journal " . . . deserves a place alongside the classic collection of Negro tales, Mules and Men. Professional folklorists will applaud Dance's candor and scholarly rigor." —Richard M. Dorson An exciting new collection of Black American folklore, running the gamut from anecdotes concerning life among the slaves to obviously contemporary jokes. In their frank expression of racial attitudes and unexpurgated wit, these tales represent a radical departure from earlier collections.

Under A Bad Sign written by Jonathan Munby and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-07-15 with Literary Criticism categories.

What accounts for the persistence of the figure of the black criminal in popular culture created by African Americans? Unearthing the overlooked history of art that has often seemed at odds with the politics of civil rights and racial advancement, Under a Bad Sign explores the rationale behind this tradition of criminal self-representation from the Harlem Renaissance to contemporary gangsta culture. In this lively exploration, Jonathan Munby takes a uniquely broad view, laying bare the way the criminal appears within and moves among literary, musical, and visual arts. Munby traces the legacy of badness in Rudolph Fisher and Chester Himes’s detective fiction and in Claude McKay, Julian Mayfield, and Donald Goines’s urban experience writing. Ranging from Peetie Wheatstraw’s gangster blues to gangsta rap, he also examines criminals in popular songs. Turning to the screen, the underworld films of Oscar Micheaux and Ralph Cooper, the 1970s blaxploitation cycle, and the 1990s hood movie come under his microscope as well. Ultimately, Munby concludes that this tradition has been a misunderstood aspect of African American civic life and that, rather than undermining black culture, it forms a rich and enduring response to being outcast in America.

Collected primarily in metropolitan New York and Philadelphia during the classic era of black street poetry (i.e., during the late 1960s and early 1970s) these raps, signifyings, toasts, boasts, jokes and children's rhymes will delight general readers as well as scholars. Ranging from the simple rhymes that accompany children's games to verbally inventive insults and the epic exploits of traditional characters like Shine and Stagger Lee, these texts sound the deep rivers of culture, echoing two continents. Onwuchekwa Jemie's introductory essay situates them in a globally pan-African context and relates them to more recent forms of oral culture such as rap and spoken word.

Born In A Mighty Bad Land written by Jerry H. Bryant and has been published by Indiana University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-04-03 with Literary Criticism categories.

The figure of the violent man in the African American imagination has a long history. He can be found in 19th-century bad man ballads like "Stagolee" and "John Hardy," as well as in the black convict recitations that influenced "gangsta" rap. "Born in a Mighty Bad Land" connects this figure with similar characters in African American fiction. Many writers -- McKay and Hurston in the Harlem Renaissance; Wright, Baldwin, and Ellison in the '40s and '50s; Himes in the '50s and '60s -- saw the "bad nigger" as an archetypal figure in the black imagination and psyche. "Blaxploitation" novels in the '70s made him a virtually mythical character. More recently, Mosley, Wideman, and Morrison have presented him as ghetto philosopher and cultural adventurer. Behind the folklore and fiction, many theories have been proposed to explain the source of the bad man's intra-racial violence. Jerry H. Bryant explores all of these elements in a wide-ranging and illuminating look at one of the most misunderstood figures in African American culture.

Yippee Ki Yay Moviegoer written by Vern and has been published by Titan Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-03-01 with Performing Arts categories.

With the hilarious "instant cult classic" Seagalogy: A Study of the Ass-Kicking Films of Steven Seagal, Vern wrote a book that shook the very foundations of film criticism (then broke their wrists and threw them through a window). Now he's back, and this time he's got all 'the films of badass cinema' in his sights... Discover how one review earned Vern a wrestling challenge from the film's director; and how his explosive essay on the PG-13 rating of the fourth Die Hard movie prompted a certain 'Walter B' to walk barefoot across the broken glass of movie nerd message boards to respond... Why is the success of Transformers a sign of society on the brink of collapse? Is Mary Poppins a bit like Batman? How does Buñuel's The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie compare to Jean-Claude Van Damme's surrealist masterpiece Double Team? And why is Bruce Willis's album The Return of Bruno of historical significance? From the morality of live action/animated couples to the simple pleasures of movies that Blow Things Up Real Good, Vern has an opinion on many Important Topics, and he's not shy about sharing them in this, a collection of film criticism that will make all other collections of film criticism suffer from jealousy and low self-esteem.
