The volume is the first to take a life-course approach to the study of domestic work in Italy. It provides a coherent and systemic overview of time spent on housework, childcare and adult care over the life course. While most previous research has focused on the time adult women and men spend on housework and the division of domestic chores among partners, this unique contribution studies the amount of time spent on chores by Italians in different phases of the life course. It addresses relevant aspects often neglected in time use studies, such as the socialization to domestic chores among children, teenagers and young adults living in the parental home and the reproduction of gender inequalities in housework at later stages of the life course.

This book describes how forensic doctors’ registrations have been used to describe different types of deaths in the Netherlands. The book consists of two parts. Part 1 describes the gradual increase in the number of suicides where helium is used combined with an exit-bag since the publication of the book ‘Uitweg’ published in 2013 in Amsterdam and the rest of the Netherlands. It recounts which kind of individuals choose this method, as well as which individuals choose to use a barbiturate overdose. It also describes in which cases the forensic physician in the presence of the Crime Scene Technicians investigates a suicide. Part 2 describes which individuals had a risk of lying unnoticed dead in a home for more than two weeks (‘domestic setting corpse’) and how common this phenomenon is in the four largest cities in the Netherlands. In addition, it describes whether preventive measures against loneliness in both Amsterdam and Rotterdam, deployed after the media attention following the discovery of a 10-year-old housing corpse in Rotterdam, led to a decrease in the number of domestic setting corpses. This study shows that there is no difference in the number of domestic setting corpses before and after the implementation of the preventive measures.

Scholars increasingly recognise that understanding the history of religion means understanding worship and devotion as well as doctrines and polemics. Early modern Christianity consisted of its lived experience. This collection and its companion volume (Worship and the Parish Church in Early Modern Britain, ed. Private and domestic devotion - how early modern men and women practised their religion when they were not in church - is a vital and largely hidden subject. Why did African-American women novelists use idealized stories of bourgeois courtship and marriage to mount arguments on social reform during the last decade of the nineteenth century, during a time when resurgent racism conditioned the lives of all black Americans? Such stories now seem like apolitical fantasies to contemporary readers. This is the question at the center of Tate's examination of the novels of Pauline Hopkins, Emma Kelley, Amelia Johnson, Katherine Tillman, and Frances Harper. Domestic Allegories of Political Desire is more than a literary study; it is also a social and intellectual history--a cultural critique of a period that historian Rayford W. Logan called "the Dark Ages of recent American history." Against a rich contextual framework, extending from abolitionist protest to the Black Aesthetic, Tate argues that the idealized marriage plot in these novels does not merely depict the heroine's happiness and economic prosperity. More importantly, that plot encodes a resonant cultural narrative--a domestic allegory--about the political ambitions of an emancipated people. Once this domestic allegory of political desire is unmasked in these novels, it can be seen as a significant discourse of the post-Reconstruction era for representing African-Americans' collective dreams about freedom and for reconstructing those contested dreams into consummations of civil liberty.
