Andy Hughess work explores the detritus and garbage washed up on the shores where he surfs in surprisingly lush and romantic photographs. Despite their ominous presence, these mass-produced items become aesthetic forms within the open theater of the beach. By photographing everyday products in such an environment, Hughes attempts to draw attention to the small scale, the unseen, and the pollutants of modern industrial consumerist society. A portion of the proceeds from this book, which was designed by well-known designer David Carson, will be donated to three charities: Surfrider Foundation, Surfers Against Sewage, and the Marine Conservation Society.

In 1960, Dr. George Deacon ofthe National Institute ofOceanography in England organized a meeting in Easton, Maryland that summarized the state of our understanding at that time of ocean wave statistics and dynamics. It was a pivotal occasion: spectral techniques for wave measurement were beginning to be used, wave-wave interactions hadjust been discovered, and simple models for the growth of waves by wind were being developed. The meeting laid the foundation for much work that was to follow, but one could hardly have imagined the extent to which new techniques of measurement, particularly by remote sensing, new methods of calculation and computation, and new theoretical and laboratory results would, in the following twenty years, build on this base. When Gaspar Valenzuela of the V. S. Naval Research Laboratory perceived that the time was right for a second such meeting, it was natural that Sir George Deacon would be invited to serve as honorary chairman for the meeting, and the entire waves community was delighted at his acceptance. The present volume contains reviewed and edited papers given at this second meeting, held this time in Miami, Florida, May 13-20, 1981, with the generous support of the Office of Naval Research, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Application Of Short Crested Wave Theory In The Design Of Three Dimensional Coastal Hydrodynamic Models written by William Leo Wood and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1980 with Bathing beaches categories.

In spring 1973 a series of field experiments was initiated to investigate the three dimensional structure of a coastal hydrodynamic system. These field investigations supported the concept that short-crested wave theory is applicable to modeling of incident wind-wave transformations from offshore to the outer surf zone. Application of short-crested wave theory to the design of coastal hydrodynamic models was also considered appropriate because of the theories inherent three dimensional structure. Concurrent with this work two field experiments were conducted in 1974 and 1976 to measure vertical and horizontal distribution of longshore current velocity and to monitor temporal variations in current velocity at a point. In fall 1978 a series of experimental laboratory investigations was initiated to make precise measurements, at close spatial intervals, of wave height decay after breaking. These experiments were carried out to determine a wave height decay expression based upon the assumption that an appropriate physical conceptualization of wave energy dissipation after breaking must consider turbulence dominant to bottom friction. This report presents a detailed summary of these investigations and their results. (Author).

Instrumental Traditions And Theories Of Light written by Xiang Chen and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-03-07 with Science categories.

An analysis of the optical revolution in the context of early 19th century Britain. Far from merely involving the replacement of one optical theory by another, the revolution also involved substantial changes in instruments and the practices that surrounded them. People's judgements about classification, explanation and evaluation were affected by the way they used such optical instruments as spectroscopes, telescopes, polarisers, photometers, gratings, prisms and apertures. There were two instrumental traditions in this historical period, each of which nurtured a body of practice that exemplified how optical instruments should be operated, and especially how the eye should be used. These traditions functioned just like paradigms, shaping perspectives and even world views. Readership: Scholars and graduate students in the history of science, history of instrument, philosophy of science and science studies. Can also be used as a textbook in graduate courses on 19th century physics.

Science And The Sociology Of Knowledge Rle Social Theory written by Michael Mulkay and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-08-07 with Social Science categories.

How far is scientific knowledge a product of social life? In addressing this question, the major contributors to the sociology of knowledge have agreed that the conclusions of science are dependent on social action only in a very special and limited sense. In Science and the Sociology of Knowledge Michael Mulkay's first aim is to identify the philosophical assumptions which have led to this view of science as special; and to present a systematic critique of the standard philosophical account of science, showing that there are no valid epistemological grounds for excluding scientific knowledge from the scope of sociological analysis. The rest of the book is devoted to developing a preliminary interpretation of the social creation of scientific knowledge. The processes of knowledge-creation are delineated through a close examination of recent case studies of scientific developments. Dr Mulkay argues that knowledge is produced by means of negotiation, the outcome of which depends on the participants' use of social as well as technical resources. The analysis also shows how cultural resources are taken over from the broader social milieu and incorporated into the body of certified knowledge; and how, in the political context of society at large, scientists' technical as well as social claims are conditioned and affected by their social position.
