The history of Argentina in the second half of the twentieth century was dominated by the charismatic figures of Juan Pern and his wife Evita. Both within Argentina and in the outside world, it has come to be accepted that the populist revolution which swept through Argentina in the 1940s and profoundly transformed the political, economic and social conditions in the country was spearheaded by and Pern and Evita with little help from anyone else. Nothing, however, could be further from the truth. This biography of Domingo A. Mercante profiles not only Perns closest collaborator and a man whom Evita called the heart of Pern, but also an important leader in his own right who was genuinely committed to democratic government. This book documents Mercantes essential contributions to the Peronist movement and to the history of Argentina, accomplishments that have undeservedly been obscured by the shadow cast by Pern and Evita over all other figures with whom they shared the political stage.

"A biography, written by his son, of Domingo Mercante, Perón's right-hand man during his rise to power and then governor of the province of Buenos Aires. Contains some interesting information on the power struggles within the Perón regime. While based on the son's memories, as well as privately held documents, there is little new here"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 58.

Populism has been one of the most important phenomena in the political and social history of Latin America. In the Shadow of Perón challenges several commonly held assumptions about the nature of populism and the relations between the charismatic leader and the popular masses. Devoted to the second line of Peronist leadership in Argentina from the 1940s onwards, it focuses on the figure of Juan Atilio Bramuglia, who tried to offer an alternative path for the movement. The volume stresses the heterogeneous nature of Peronism and traces the various ideological sources of its doctrine. It also analyzes Perón's machinations in order to maintain his leadership and eliminate any opposition within the movement.

Within Argentina, Juan Domingo Perón continues to be the subject of exaggerated and diametrically opposed views. A dictator, a great leader, the hero of the working classes and Argentina's “first worker”; a weak and spineless man dependent on his strongerwilled wife; a Latin American visionary; a traitor, responsible for dragging Argentina into a modern, socially just 20th century society or, conversely, destroying for all time a prosperous nation and fomenting class war and unreasonable aspirations among his client base. Outside Argentina, Perón remains overshadowed by his second wife, Evita. The life of this fascinating and unusual man, whose charisma, political influence and controversial nature continue to generate interest, remains somewhat of a mystery to the rest of the world. Perón remains a key figure in Argentine politics, still able to occupy so much of the political spectrum as to constrain the development of viable alternatives. Jill Hedges explores the life and personality of Perón and asks why he remains a political icon despite the 'negatives' associated with his extreme personalism.

Eva Peron remains Argentina's best-known and most iconic personality, surpassing even sporting superstars such as Diego Maradona or Lionel Messi, and far outlasting her own husband, President Juan Domingo Peron himself a remarkable and charismatic political leader without whom she, as an uneducated woman in an elitist and male-dominated society, could not have existed as a political figure. In this book, Jill Hedges tells the story of a remarkable woman whose glamour, charisma, political influence and controversial nature continue to generate huge amounts interest 60 years after her death. From her poverty-stricken upbringing as an illegitimate child in rural Argentina, Peron made her way to the highest echelons of Argentinean society, via a brief acting career and her relationship with Juan. After their political breakthrough, her charitable work and magnetic personality earned her wide public acclaim and there was national mourning following her death from cancer at the age of just 33.Based on new sources and first-hand interviews, the book will seek to explore the personality and experiences of 'Evita' and the contemporary events that influenced her and were in turn influenced by her. As the first substantive biography of Eva Peron in English, this book will be essential reading for anyone interested in modern Argentinean history and the cult of 'Evita'."

"Third volume of in-depth analysis of the army. Format is similar to previous two volumes. There is, however, more emphasis on the internal maneuvering which characterizes the period. The detail is based on information provided by the participants. A worthy successor to the other studies and essential for analysis of the period. In the two decades after World War II, a vibrant cultural infrastructure of cineclubs, archives, festivals, and film schools took shape in Latin America through the labor of film enthusiasts who often worked in concert with French and France-based organizations. In promoting the emerging concept and practice of art cinema, these film-related institutions advanced geopolitical and class interests simultaneously in a polarized Cold War climate. Seeking to sharpen viewers' critical faculties as a safeguard against ideological extremes, institutions of film culture lent prestige to Latin America's growing middle classes and capitalized on official and unofficial efforts to boost the circulation of French cinema, enhancing the nation's soft power in the wake of military defeat and occupation. As the first book-length, transnational analysis of postwar Latin American film culture, Transatlantic Cinephilia deepens our understanding of how institutional networks have nurtured alternative and nontheatrical cinemas.

Argentina written by Jill Hedges and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-06-30 with History categories.

In the early 20th century, Argentina possessed one of the world's most prosperous economies, yet since then Argentina has suffered a series of boom-and-bust cycles that have seen it fall well behind its regional neighbours. At the same time, despite the lack of significant ethnic or linguistic divisions, Argentina has failed to create an over-arching post-independence national identity and its political and social history has been marred by frictions, violence and a 50-year series of military coups d'etat. In this book, Jill Hedges analyses the modern history of Argentina from the adoption of the 1853 constitution until the present day, exploring political, economic and social aspects of Argentina's recent past in a study which will be invaluable for anyone interested in South American history and politics.
