Excerpt from Dominion Dental Journal, 1898, Vol. 10 It is said that one of the kings of Spain was afflicted with an offensive breath, to remedy which the physician advised His Majesty to chew a composition of gum-arabic, ambergris and other perfumes, the use of which occasioned a great expenditure of saliva. The courtiers from the vanity of imitating their superiors, went very generally into the same customs. The consequence was, that those who also followed the fashion with ardor, lost their appetites and became emaciated, and consumption increased so fast among them that the practice was forbidden by royal edict. Those who do not eject the saliva from tobacco, but swallow the mixture, usually find it induces faintness, palpitation of the heart, trembling of the limbs, and, sooner or later, some chronic trouble. Excerpt from Dominion Dental Journal, 1898, Vol. 10 Gentlemen, - It requires sometimes more than the courage of ones convictions to express an honest opinion, much less caution in attacking a favorite of the people. A prudent man, one who wishes to sail quietly down the popular stream, would be disposed rather to flatter and applaud the object of their affections. But an honest man, who may differ a little from others, as a prudent one, can never flatter where he feels a friendship. Facts are said to be stubborn things, but from these we form conclusions which, carefully analyzed, enable the unbiased and unprejudiced to return an honest and conscientious verdict. History records that the name of Nicotine, or Tobacco, was said to be from one Jean Nicotte, who first introduced it into France, hence Nicoteana; or, as said by others, by Jacobius Nicotius, Ambassador to the Court of Portugal from Francis II., King of France, he having purchased some of the seeds of this plant from a Dutchman in 1560, who had brought them from America, and from this seed it was brought to France; Sir Francis Drake carried it to England, and Sir Walter Raleigh first brought it into fashion; the dried plant and leaf was afterward imported from Tobago, and hence its present name tobacco. The common tobacco, so called Verginia (N. Tabacum), is a native of the warm parts of America, the cultivation of which had extended, before the discovery of the New World by Columbus, far to the north of the plant in which it is indigenous. Excerpt from Dominion Dental Journal, 1889, Vol. 1 In a paper read before the New York Odontological Society, in December, 1875, I ventured to give one of the quickest cases of regulating the teeth on record, done without plates or ligatures, and comprising ideas as old as Hun ter and as modern as Tomes. The case was a unique one, inasmuch as it was one where the patient, a young man eighteen years old, had determined to have the teeth extracted and artificial substitutes inserted. I am aware that other modes of treatment might have been used by those who could command a large fee, but as the case was one which I volunteered as an experiment, and for which no reasonable fee was expected, I made choice of two evils - the one I chose having proved to be a blessing in disguise. Through the courtesy of the publisher of the Cosmos I am able to present the illustrations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Dominion Dental Journal, 1890, Vol. 2 The following was read before the ads. Of Europe, in Baden Baden, in 1878, and am happy to say that the views expressed then, have worked their way slowly to the front, and to-day are known under the popular title of Combination Fillings. We have arrived at this result through an enforced eclecticism in our treatment of teeth, by grasping at, and making use of every material offered to us, in our vain efforts to prevent decay, and preserve the organs confided to the care of our experience. Ten years is a fair time in which to decide the important query: Have we gained greater knowledge in this time to enable us to save more teeth than in 1879? Are more teeth saved, comparatively, to-day than formerly? Let each individual practitioner ask himself these questions, and answer them for his own satisfaction. Every man knows where he has failed, so let him try again, and try something else than that in which he has failed, and find out new results as beneficial or otherwise, until he developes a natural eclectic knowledge of the manner and material he will use, according to the case. This can only take place with surety when the patient is a regular visitor, and one has time to note the perma nency of the filling material used. Excerpt from Dominion Dental Journal, 1911, Vol. 23: Official Organ of the Canadian Dental Association It' is quite evident, according to researches made through the history of ages, that it has always been considered of more or less importance that the teeth, as well as other parts of the body, should be cleansed, in order that the individual might enjoy good health and the esteem of his fellows. The earliest Chinese works on medicine show that eighteen hundred years before Christ some attention was given to the care of the' teeth.
