Siguiendo el mismo enfoque y los mismos planteamientos metodológicos de los títulos anteriores —Don Quijote por tierras extranjeras (2007), Don Quijote, cosmopolita (2009) y Don Quijote en su periplo universal (2011)—, Don Quijote en los cinco continentes ofrece una selección de veintiún estudios innovadores sobre ejemplos representativos y aspectos concretos de la recepción que la obra maestra de Cervantes ha tenido, a lo largo de los últimos cuatro siglos, más allá de las fronteras españolas, en países como Alemania, Argentina, Bélgica, Brasil, Canadá, China, Corea del Sur, Francia, Grecia, Inglaterra, Japón, Nicaragua, Portugal, Sudáfrica, Suiza o Uruguay. Además, este libro incluye varios estudios que se centran en temas como la música, las lecturas en clave ideológica, o las influencias de otras obras de diversos países, con ejemplos de los Estados Unidos de América, Rusia, o la antigua República Democrática Alemana. In Literary Narratives and the Cultural Imagination: King Arthur and Don Quixote as National Heroes the author examines traditional Arthurian and Cervantine literary narratives to discuss how the two literary figures became paladins of their respective nations. Whereas the former bestows upon the homeland a positive image of Britain, based on military might, a glorious past and a promise of return, the latter contributes to a negative image of Spain based on a narrative of defeat and faded glory. In the analysis of the political intentions behind the literature that gave wings to the rise as paragons of these very famous literary characters, a semblance of the national imaginaries of the countries of their birth appears. Indeed, the tradition of Waterloo and the tradition of La Mancha are polar opposites in their Weltanschauung, and they only have in common that both heroes, Arthur and Quijote, are depicted as paladins of justice, benefactors, and redeemers of their land of birth. It is this idealized view of what is possibly the figment of a writer’s (or many different writers) pen that astonishes the reader, for behind it lies an intention to market (for internal and external consumption) both literary creations, exceeding the boundaries of the creative fiction that invented them to transform them into myths and political symbols of their respective nations.

La obra titulada Dom Quichote de la Manche. Tomo v, fue un ejercicio de escritura creativa del pequeño duque de Anjou, quien fue capaz de emular a cervantes con ejercicios de retórica. La redacción comprende 55 páginas, más un índice de capítulos, que lleva en cabeza la fecha de 1693 y se cierra con una a de Anjou. Repartidas en seis capítulos, las aventuras de este quijote visto por un niño de nueve años y medio nos revela parcelas de su imaginación, de su humor naciente, y de los conocimientos teóricos que impregnan su educación principesca. Su contenido es infantil pero refleja nítidamente el entusiasmo que el quijote despierta en los más pequeños el duque de Anjou pudo leer Don Quijote de la Mancha (1678 y 1677) traducido por Filleau y dedicado a su señor padre, el delfín de Francia. Las ambiciones históricas literarias de Felipe V influyeron notablemente en la redacción. Cervantes nunca pudo imaginarse que su continuador fuese un jovencísimo príncipe francés que pocos años más tarde sería rey de España.

La traducción de El Quijote en Francia en los siglos XVII y XVIII, de Maurice Bardon, permite dar a conocer al lector español una obra de singular importancia, publicada originalmente en París, en 1931. Desde entonces, el estudio de Bardon se ha considerado un texto de referencia en el ámbito del hispanismo francés, con una gran influencia posterior. Esta edición no sólo constituye un testimonio del impacto que tuvo el Quijote en la Francia del Clasicismo y del Siglo de las Luces, sino que ofrece sugerentes claves interpretativas sobre el libro de Cervantes. El análisis de las traducciones del Quijote en el país vecino, así como su repercusión en reconocidos novelistas, filósofos y dramaturgos, son algunos de los aspectos que se abordan en este apasionante recorrido por la recepción de la obra de Cervantes desde 1605 hasta 1815. Bardon también plantea la polémica relación entre el texto original y el Quijote de Avellaneda, y las sucesivas relecturas del personaje cervantino en la encrucijada entre la Ilustración y el Romanticismo. La edición se acompaña con un estudio introductorio de Françoise Étienvre, que presenta la trayectoria intelectual de Bardon y sitúa al libro en el destacado lugar que le corresponde. Françoise Etienvre es catedrática de literatura y civilización castellana (siglos XVIII-XIX) en la universidad de la Sorbonne Nouvelle, y directora de un Centro de Investigación sobre la historia cultural española en los siglos mencionados. Ha publicado varios libros y artículos sobre la Ilustración, estudiada tanto en sus aspectos literarios como históricos. Se ha interesado, en particular, por la fortuna del Quijote en el siglo XVIII, por cuestiones de traducción, de retórica y poética en la misma época, y por Antonio de Capmany al que ha dedicado una monografía (Ed. Champion, 2001). Del mismo Capmany editó el famoso Centinela contra franceses (Tamesis Books, 1988; reed. Centro de Estudios Políticos y Constitucionales, 2008).

The two volumes gather the most important findings of the nine sessions held at the Asociación Internacional de Hispanistas (AIH) conference in Münster, Germany, in 2016.
