The adventures of Don Quixote, the famous knight errant, and his lady-love, Dulcinea del Toboso that Miguel de Cervantes portrays in his epic novel, "The Ingenious Hidalgo Don Quixote of La Mancha"; and made more famous by countless adaptations featured in movies and theatrical musical productions of that singular masterpiece reflective of the human condition has captured the imagination of generations throughout the world. "Don Quixote's Impossible Dream: To Everyman His Dulcinea", by David P. Grzan, has elevated the notion of chivalric love, in the fairest terms, which Don Quixote advanced to the honor and esteem of Dulcinea, his true love, the quest of his impossible dream. Love, the most powerful force in the universe, has been the primary inspiration that has propelled all the Don Quixote's, known and unknown that have ever lived, in their attempt to accomplish great deeds in the name of their particular Dulcinea. This epic poem immortalizes the triumphs, tragedies, obstacles, struggles and courage that can accompany and at other times can thwart the greatest of all prizes, love, in the context of the infinite profoundness and complexity of the human dynamic, which is sublimely represented and exemplified by the relationship between Don Quixote and Dulcinea.

When the Cuban revolutionary, Jose Marti awakens from death in the afterlife, he finds himself high in the Sierra Maestra and is swiftly led by forces to the Hacienda of the spirits. There he finds the ghosts of his fellow revolutionary comrades of Cuba's bid for independence. As time continues, the spirit of Jose Marti finds the attic of the house in which the souls have been drawn. Apparitions of books swiftly manifest upon empty bookshelves lining the attic walls. Immediately observing the novel, Don Quixote de la Mancha he begins to read his unrivalled favorite literature aloud. His fellow veterans also discover the library and as Jose Marti continues, he summons the spirit of Don Quixote; returned from the dead to an afterlife as a worldly ghost. When the owners of the hacienda appear to the spirits for the first time, they become aware that their presence has been felt by the couple. Soon Lina gives birth to a son. Instantly a special bond forms between Don Quixote and the newborn. The veterans are equally enamored with the new child; Fidel Alejandro Castro. Don Quixote serves as a kind of alter ego for the young Castro, often seeing the events of his childhood and pre-revolution society through the prism of the rites of chivalry. In The Lost Dream of Don Quixote, Rigg weaves historical fact with magical fiction into a story of how Fidel Castro drew from his subconscious spiritual guides which inspired his rise into becoming Cuba's revolutionary leader and laying the foundations for a new modern chivalric society.

A groundbreaking cultural history of the most influential, most frequently translated, and most imitated novel in the world. The year 2015 marks the four hundredth anniversary of the publication of the complete Don Quixote of La Mancha—an ageless masterpiece that has proven unusually fertile and endlessly adaptable. Flaubert was inspired to turn Emma Bovary into “a knight in skirts.” Freud studied Quixote’s psyche. Mark Twain was fascinated by it, as were Kafka, Picasso, Nabokov, Borges, and Orson Welles. The novel has spawned ballets and operas, poems and plays, movies and video games, and even shapes the identities of entire nations. Spain uses it as a sort of constitution and travel guide; and the Americas were conquered, then sought their independence, with the knight as a role model. In Quixote, Ilan Stavans, one of today’s preeminent cultural commentators, explores these many manifestations. Training his eye on the tumultuous struggle between logic and dreams, he reveals the ways in which a work of literature is a living thing that influences and is influenced by the world around it.

This book is a unique scholarly attempt to examine Don Quixote from multiple angles to see how the re-accentuation of the world’s greatest literary hero takes place in film, theatre, and literature. To accomplish this task, eighteen scholars from the USA, Canada, Spain, and Great Britain have come together, and each of them has brought his/her unique perspective to the subject. For the first time, Don Quixote is discussed from the point of re-accentuation, i.e. having in mind one of the key Bakhtinian concepts that will serve as a theoretical framework. A primary objective was therefore to articulate, relying on the concept of re-accentuation, that the history of the novel has benefited enormously from the re-accentuation of Don Quixote helping us to shape countless iconic novels from the eighteenth century, and to see how Cervantes’s title character has been reinterpreted to suit the needs of a variety of cultures across time and space.

The book cover and spine above and the images which follow were not part of the original Ormsby translation—they are taken from the 1880 edition of J. W. Clark, illustrated by Gustave Dore. Clark in his edition states that, “The English text of ‘Don Quixote’ adopted in this edition is that of Jarvis, with occasional corrections from Motteaux.” See in the introduction below John Ormsby’s critique of both the Jarvis and Motteaux translations. It has been elected in the present Project Gutenberg edition to attach the famous engravings of Gustave Dore to the Ormsby translation instead of the Jarvis/Motteaux. The detail of many of the Dore engravings can be fully appreciated only by utilizing the “Full Size” button to expand them to their original dimensions. Ormsby in his Preface has criticized the fanciful nature of Dore’s illustrations; others feel these woodcuts and steel engravings well match Quixote’s dreams.
