În finalul romanului Donna Alba măștile personajelor cad. Mihai Aspru a vrut doar s-o „stăpânească“ pe trufașa aristocrată, îmbrăcându-și dorința în podoabe strălucitoare luate din cărți. În schimb, Georges Radu Șerban, soțul înșelat, boier rigid taxat malițios de către narator, se dovedește un veritabil erou tragic, sinucigându-se din dragoste, ca personajul lui Dostoievski. Cât o privește pe Alba, obiectul obsesiei îndelung elaborate, ea e un personaj de film din anii ‘30: femeia fatală, provocatoare de nenorociri pentru bărbații care o iubesc. Intriga dinamică, colorată de suspans, ajunge la o rezolvare cu happy end, care ar fi putut părea facilă dacă naratorul n-ar fi introdus un accent original de autoironie și umor negru, chiar în legătură cu ultima apariție a Albei. Foarte frumoasă în valurile negre de mare doliu, dar deloc îndurerată, ea îi apare bărbatului ca un înger al morții, promițându-i o primejdioasă fericire.

Despre ultimul roman publicat în timpul vieții de Gib Mihăescu s-a scris suficient, criticii și istoricii literari realizând, pe lângă judecăți de valoare (după Rusoaica, Donna Alba este considerat al doilea roman gibmihăescian care rezistă), acțiuni de definire și catalogare, de fiecare dată însă în centrul atenției comentatorilor a fost personajul narator, Mihai Aspru – tânăr „plebeu“, cu un acut sentiment al nevoii de izbândă socială („Iar eu am multe de întreprins. Mai întâi să-mi refac situația mea… civilă“), care, la terminarea liceului, o întâlnește pe „stăpâna visurilor“ sale și, după un deceniu de „asediu amoros“, dar și de parvenire, se pare că-și vede împlinite cele două năzuințe ale sale: iubirea și căpătuirea. Interpretând romanul din perspectiva acestor dominante – obsesia erotică și avansarea în plan social –, criticii s-au referit la „îndoitul caracter al romanului, acela de mare poem al dragostei și de virtuos roman de aventuri“ (Perpessicius), la „tema vădit stendhaliană“ (Pompiliu Constantinescu), la „monoideismul erotic al lui Mihai Aspru“ (Șerban Cioculescu), la faptul că „Mihai Aspru nu este un obsedat erotic, ci un simplu ambițios“, căci el „nu cucerește Femeia, ci își apropriază Aristocrația“ (Nicolae Manolescu), iar Donna Alba „nu este /…/ simbolul unei iubiri, ci simbolul unei ambiții – virile ce e drept, dar al cărei mobil îl constituie, mărturisit sau nu, snobismul“ (I. Negoițescu).
