Women move through the world differently from men. The constraints and perils, the perceptions and complex emotions women journey with are different. For many women, the inner landscape is as important as the outer. This does not mean that the woman traveller is not politically aware, historically astute or in touch with the customs and language of the place, but it does mean that a woman cannot travel and not be aware of her body and the limitations her sex presents.

This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. The First World War was the first ‘total war’. Its industrial weaponry damaged millions of men and drove whole armies underground into dangerously unhealthy trenches. Many were killed. Many more suffered terrible, life-threatening injuries: wound infections such as gas gangrene and tetanus, exposure to extremes of temperature, emotional trauma and systemic disease. In an effort to alleviate this suffering, tens of thousands of women volunteered to serve as nurses. Of these, some were experienced professionals, while others had undergone only minimal training. But regardless of their preparation, they would all gain a unique understanding of the conditions of industrial warfare. Until recently their contributions, both to the saving of lives and to our understanding of warfare, have remained largely hidden from view. By combining biographical research with textual analysis, Nurse writers of the great war opens a window onto their insights into the nature of nursing and the impact of warfare.

A Modern History Of Georgia written by David M. Lang and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-01-01 with Georgia (Republic) categories.

The Georgians... have a civilization stretching back over more than 3000 years, an extensive literary and artisitic heritage, and a rapidly developing industrial and agricultural economy. As the native country of Stalin, Georgia is assured of a place in the modern political history of the world - from Chapter One: The Land and The People The former Soviet republic of Georgia is both the birthplace of the USSR's prime architects, Stalin and Beria, as well as the Land of the Golden Fleece which Jason and the Argonauts sought. With the height of the Cold War at the end of the 1950s as its cut-off point, this sometimes controversial but always insightful work charts the events in a volatile history that led to the creation of the modern state. A particular focus is the unique way in which Georgia absorbed the culture and politics of successive invaders from prehistoric times to the Arabs, Seljuks, and Mongols, to the occupation by Tsarist Russia and the Soviets. Already regarded as a classic, this book creates vivid portraits of time and place. ILLUSTRATED.

Here then is the fruit of Elena Kuz'mina's life-long quest for the Indo-Iranians. Already its predecessor ("Otkuda prishli indoarii?," published in 1994) was considered the most comprehensive analysis of the origins of the Indo-Iranians ever published, but in this new, significantly expanded edition (edited by J.P. Mallory) we find an encyclopaedic account of the Andronovo culture of Eurasia. Taking its evidence from archaeology, linguistics, ethnology, mythology, and physical anthropology pertaining to Indo-Iranian origins and expansions, it comprehensively covers the relationships of this culture with neighboring areas and cultures, and its role in the foundation of the Indo-Iranian peoples.

The Making Of Bronze Age Eurasia written by Philip L. Kohl and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-01-22 with Social Science categories.

This book provides an overview of Bronze Age societies of Western Eurasia through an investigation of the archaeological record. The Making of Bronze Age Eurasia outlines the long-term processes and patterns of interaction that link these groups together in a shared historical trajectory of development. Interactions took the form of the exchange of raw materials and finished goods, the spread and sharing of technologies, and the movements of peoples from one region to another. Kohl reconstructs economic activities from subsistence practices to the production and exchange of metals and other materials. Kohl also argues forcefully that the main task of the archaeologist should be to write culture-history on a spatially and temporally grand scale in an effort to detect large, macrohistorical processes of interaction and shared development.
