This volume, published in honor of historian Geoffrey Parker, explores the working of European empires in a global perspective, focusing on one of the most important themes of Parker’s work: the limits of empire, which is to say, the centrifugal forces - sacral, dynastic, military, diplomatic, geographical, informational - that plagued imperial formations in the early modern period (1500-1800). During this time of wrenching technological, demographic, climatic, and economic change, empires had to struggle with new religious movements, incipient nationalisms, new sea routes, new military technologies, and an evolving state system with complex new rules of diplomacy. Engaging with a host of current debates, the chapters in this book break away from conventional historical conceptions of empire as an essentially western phenomenon with clear demarcation lines between the colonizer and the colonized. These are replaced here by much more fluid and subtle conceptions that highlight complex interplays between coalitions of rulers and ruled. In so doing, the volume builds upon recent work that increasingly suggests that empires simply could not exist without the consent of their imperial subjects, or at least significant groups of them. This was as true for the British Raj as it was for imperial China or Russia. Whilst the thirteen chapters in this book focus on a number of geographic regions and adopt different approaches, each shares a focus on, and interest in, the working of empires and the ways that imperial formations dealt with - or failed to deal with - the challenges that beset them. Taken together, they reflect a new phase in the evolving historiography of empire. They also reflect the scholarly contributions of the dedicatee, Geoffrey Parker, whose life and work are discussed in the introductory chapters and, we’re proud to say, in a delightful chapter by Parker himself, an autobiographical reflection that closes the book.

This volume explores the relevance of decline within the republican tradition. While scholarship on republicanism thrives, the idea of decline, which has been prominent in republican theory since antiquity, has received relatively little attention. The essays in this volume take a broad cultural perspective and study a wide variety of authors and (con)texts to situate decline among the key concepts in the history of republicanism. De vanzelfsprekendheid waarmee migranten zonder verblijfstitel worden aangeduid als illegalen is een recent verschijnsel. Lange tijd konden migranten zonder paspoort naar Nederland komen en hadden geen vergunningen nodig om hier te wonen en te werken. Vanaf 1930, en vooral de laatste decennia van de twintigste eeuw, werd het toelatingsbeleid strenger. Dat hield migranten echter niet tegen, terwijl de mogelijkheden om ze weer uit te zetten beperkt waren. Tussenland verhaalt de geschiedenis van steeds nieuwe groepen migranten die zonder toestemming naar Nederland kwamen en analyseert hoe beleidsmakers, parlement, publiek en migranten zich mengden in de strijd wie mocht blijven en wie zou moeten vertrekken. De studie laat zien dat juist het strenge toelatingsbeleid en de hardnekkige fixatie op controle leidden tot illegalisering en criminalisering van migranten.

In dit nummer van Doopsgezinde Bijdragen pleit Mike Driedger voor gedegen historisch onderzoek naar het Nederlands doperdom. Zijn bijdrage is natuurlijk koren op de molen van de Doopsgezinde Bijdragen. In zijn bijdrage laat hij zien hoe het enthousiast trompetgeschal rond het jaar 1525 leidt tot een vertekening van de geschiedenis, een eenzijdige focus op het Duitstalige doperdom en tot een veronachtzaming van de geschiedenis van het Nederlands doperdom. Zoals altijd biedt DB een keur aan artikelen waarin het internationale doperdom en met name het Nederlands doperdom wordt belicht. Marius van Hoogstraten belicht vanuit een nieuw perspectief nogmaals de doperse tucht. Piet Visser richt de blik op de cultuurgeschiedenis en pleit voor bestudering van de doopsgezinde cultuur in de Republiek. Hij laat zien dat hier nog een veld braak ligt. Ruud Lambour vraagt aandacht voor doopsgezinden en het slavernijverleden. Mieke Krebber beschrijft het leven van een van de grondleggers van de doopsgezinde bibliotheek Amsterdam, Pieter Fontein. Dezelfde Ruud Lambour laat ook zien dat het weerloosheidsbeginsel in de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse doopsgezinden veel minder vanzelf heeft gesproken dan wel eens wordt aangenomen. Alpita de Jong bezorgt in haar bijdrage een brief van Joost Halbertsma. Actueel is de fotoreportage van Ad van de Staaij over de door Rein Willink opgezette hulpactie in Oekraïne onder Stalin. Van de Staaij legt de laatste hand aan een dissertatie over dit onderwerp. In deze jaargang van Doopsgezinde Bijdragen is andermaal de rubriek ‘Bijzonder Dopers’ terug te vinden. Deze keer heeft Daan de Clercq de pen ter hand genomen. In deze rubriek belicht iemand dopers materieel erfgoed waarmee hij of zij ook zelf een band heeft. Wie een bijdrage wil leveren aan deze rubriek wordt verzocht contact op te nemen met de redactie! En dan zijn er nog de recensies. Uit het grote aantal recensies blijkt andermaal hoeveel er op het terrein van de geschiedenis van het internationale doperdom te doen is. DB draagt er graag aan bij dat het gehele veelkleurige palet van de geschiedenis van het doperdom voor het voetlicht komt.
