Dear Reader: China Book 2, the companion to China Book 1 (featuring Suzhou, China) is a short journey from 2006-8 showcasing my continued interest in Chinese architecture. The book includes various areas in Beijing, in He Bei Province; Guilin and Yangshuo in Guangxi Province; and Tongli, Tai Hu Lake and Wuxi in Jiangsu Province. This coffee table series of books was born out of my love for photography and interest in architecture to capture this pictorial journey of doors, windows, temples, and gateways of fascinating and colorful cities. Represented here are architectural flavors of the past to those of modern China: classical gardens; famous pagodas; Buddha temples; Beijing's glorious Summer Palace; the mysterious Forbidden City; historical Tian'namen Square; the UNESCO ancient wonder of the world The Great Wall; a mini lost Shangri-la; the magical mountains of Guilin and Yangshuo; the scenic spots of Taihu Lake; and the almost unheard of Sex Museum in Tongli. China Book 3 will follow in 2009 and will showcase the cities and surrounding areas of Shanghai, Tibet, Xi'an, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. The continuing series will include the United Kingdom, Europe, Asia, SE Asia, The Middle East, Oceana, the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. Enjoy the journey and Bon voyage!

Dear Reader: China Book 1 is a short journey in 2006-7 through the town of Suzhou, Jiangsu, China, one of China's five most beautiful cities. While living and working in China as an art teacher in an international school, I used my time off and my love for photography to create a pictorial journey that I am proud to share with all of you. Doors, Windows, Temples, and Gateways of China captures glimpses of this fascinating and colorful city. It begins with the Suzhou city center and carries through to the old canal districts, Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP), and various temples and pagodas. Included are seven of Suzhou's famous classical gardens, which date back several hundred years and continue to serve the people as lovely peaceful retreats. Represented here are architectural flavors, including dynasties of the past to those of modern China. There are no photo captions or in-depth writings; however, you will find a few brief narratives in the author's introduction which is provided in English, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, explaining some of the architecture in my photographs. Whether you have been to China or not, I hope you will appreciate this collection of images and two other books to follow in 2009, which will include Beijing, Shanghai, and Tibet, along with smaller surrounding areas of China. The continuing series will include the United Kingdom, Europe, SE Asia, the Middle East, Oceana, and North America. Enjoy the journey and bon voyage! Josephine F. Quintana

The decoration and design of doors and windows was a fixture in classical Chinese architecture. Doors and windows were symbolic curtains separating heaven and earth in traditional Chinese architecture. Opening these curtains created an all-important harmonious link between heaven and earth. The apex of classical Chinese architecture was in the Qin (221-206 B.C.) and Han periods (206 B.C.-220 A.D.), the Tang (618-906 A.D.) and Song periods (960-1127 A.D.) as well as the Ming (1368-1644 A.D.) and Qing periods (1644-1911 A.D.). With its precisely printed illustrations and concise texts in English and Chinese, this large format, extremely elegantly finished book gives the reader an opportunity to study the major creations of these periods.

A Jesuit Garden In Beijing And Early Modern Chinese Culture written by Hui Zou and has been published by Purdue University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-02-01 with History categories.

In this volume, Hui Zou analyzes historical, architectural, visual, literary, and philosophical perspectives on the Western-styled garden that formed part of the great Yuanming Yuan complex in Beijing, constructed during the Qing dynasty. Designed and built in the late eighteenth century by Italian and French Jesuits, the garden described in this book was a wonderland of multistoried buildings, fountains, labyrinths, and geometrical hills. It even included an open-air theater. Through detailed examination of historical literature and representations, Zou analyzes the ways in which the Jesuits accommodated their design within the Chinese cultural context. He shows how an especially important element of their approach was the application of a linear perspective—the "line-method"—to create the jing, the Chinese concept of the bounded bright view of a garden scene. Hui Zou's book demonstrates how Jesuit metaphysics fused with Chinese cosmology and broadens our understanding of cultural and religious encounters in early Chinese modernity. It presents an intriguing reflection on the interaction between Western metaphysics and the poetical tradition of Chinese culture. The volume will be of interest to scholars and students in a variety of fields, including literature, philosophy, architecture, landscape and urban studies, and East-West comparative cultural studies.
