Am Beispiel des unteren Neckarraums widmet sich die Studie der wirtschaftlichen, sozialen, religisen und politischen Entwicklung einer sdwestdeutschen lndlichen Region im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert. Die Kernfrage lautet, wie es den lokalen Gesellschaften nach krisenhaften Desintegrationsprozessen im spten Ancien R'gime gelang, sich so weit zu konsolidieren, dass seit dem Vormrz eine breite Bindung an die liberale Bewegung in Baden entstehen konnte. Dieses Erkenntnisinteresse wird fr zwanzig Gemeinden auf der Basis umfangreichen Quellenmaterials verfolgt. Methodisch verbinden sich hierbei strukturanalytische, praxisgeschichtliche und kommunikationshistorische Zugriffe. Die empirischen Resultate stehen vielfach quer zu herkmmlichen Lesarten und regen dazu an, die Transformation lndlicher Gesellschaften zwischen 1750 und 1850 anders als bisher zu deuten. So sprechen die Befunde etwa gegen die gngige Interpretation der drflichen Konfliktmuster jener Periode als einer Fortschreibung frhneuzeitlicher Handlungsorientierungen. In solchen Neueinschtzungen bewhrt sich die thematische Breite der Arbeit ebenso wie ihre die Epochengrenze um 1800 berschreitende Perspektive.

Building on the new critical historiography about the evolution of the European state, the book analyses how administrators, scientists, popular publicists and other actors tried to redefine the realms of state action in the "Sattelzeit" (Koselleck).
