Cette recherche vise donc à éclairer la genèse et l'évolution des traditions anciennes sur le sort final de Marie, en examinant aussi bien les traditions littéraires que les traditions topologiques, transmises à la fois par des textes et sur des lieux. Seules ces deux approches peuvent permettre d'accéder à une meilleure compréhension d'un tel dossier. Les textes qui nous ont transmis les traditions anciennes sont à la fois nombreux et foisonnants. Leur intérêt est de première importance pour la connaissance du développement du culte marial dans le christianisme ancien en particulier parce qu'ils portent l'écho de conflits théologiques - en rapport avec la doctrine de l'incarnation et de la résurrection - dont la réalité nous est certes connue mais non pas nécessairement les tenants et aboutissants. Ces textes nous sont parvenus en de nombreuses langues ; nulle pièce ne peut véritablement être exploitée si l'on n'a pas une vision globale de tous les autres documents. Les lieux présentent l'intérêt d'une approche neuve de la question. La connaissance des données topologiques complète ainsi celle des sources littéraires.

The ancient Dormition and Assumption traditions are a collection of over sixty different narratives, preserved in nine ancient languages, that commemorate the end of the Virgin Mary's life. These traditions have long been overlooked by scholars of early Christianity, no doubt largely because this complicated corpus was insufficiently well known. The present study aims to remedy this situation with a detailed analysis of the earliest traditions of Mary's death, including liturgical and archaeological evidence as well as the numerous narrative sources. Several of the most important narratives are translated in appendices, many appearing in English for the first time. The book will be of interest to all scholars of early Christian literature.

Papers presented at the Tenth International Conference on Patristic Studies held in Oxford 1987 (see also Studia Patristica 20, 21, 22 and 23). The successive sets of Studia Patristica contain papers delivered at the International Conferences on Patristic Studies, which meet for a week once every four years in Oxford; they are held under the aegis of the Theology Faculty of the University. Members of these conferences come from all over the world and most offer papers. These range over the whole field, both East and West, from the second century to a section on the Nachleben of the Fathers. The majority are short papers dealing with some small and manageable point; they raise and sometimes resolve questions about the authenticity of documents, dates of events, and such like, and some unveil new texts. The smaller number of longer papers put such matters into context and indicate wider trends.
