El Segundo Tratado sobre el Gobierno Civil, ha estado desde sus inicios indisolublemente unido a la doctrina liberal anglosajona. En el seno de ésta ocupó su autor durante algún tiempo, un sitial preferente y respetado, y en ella encontró esa obra la reverencia algo hierática que se debe a los textos fundadores. Pero la introducción de nuevos conceptos y la revisión de postulados básicos en el análisis de la formación del pensamiento político moderno que tuvo lugar durante la segunda mitad del siglo pasado, llevaron a que se revisarán muchos aspectos en que se fundaba dicho respeto. Tras la marea de republicanismo que sacudió al mundo académico anglosajón durante los años ochenta, las apelaciones tradicionales al Segundo Tratado, debieron adaptarse a los tiempos y acostumbrarse a convivir con otras aproximaciones. En ese sentido, existen legítimas dudas de hasta qué punto la heterogénea y sesgada combinación entre los derechos naturales de Locke, el análisis smithiano del mercado y la defensa de Mill de la libertad pueden fundamentar histórica y lógicamente una categoría.
