The book consists of 2 parts. The first part contains F. Dostoyevsky's story "The meek", the second part is devoted to the stories by V. Veresaev.F. Dostoyevsky is a world-famous writer. His masterpieces, such as "Crime and punishment", "Brothers Karamasovs", "The Idiot" are well known to the readers all over the world. They have been filmed and translated into many languages. "The meek" is less readable and known to the vast public. It is a sample of a psychologically-fantastic story, dealing with the mental self-criticism of the hero, the inner state of his soul, the style, so typical of Dostoyevsky's writing manner. The hero tries to understand and realize the motif of his wife's suicide. He blames himself, either addressing the imaginary judges, or speaking to himself. Being under the emotional stress, he often interrupts oneself, his speech is sometimes incoherent and seemingly senseless.Choosing the story for the translation, the authors hope that it will add to the English readers' better acquaintance with Dostoyevsky's list of stories writing style. The stories by V. Veresaev, presented in the collection, illustrate the author's style, his outlook, love of art, penetration into the inner world of his heroes, their family relations, moral values, dark and light sides of human nature. The stories "The Princess" and "Revenge" describe the fate of a woman in the unhappy marriage, her longing for real love."The Bet" was written in the period of the writer's belief in Marxism and revolutionary ideals. In "The Web" V. Veresaev touches upon the subtle spiritual experiences, love and family relations.Especially touching is the story "The Birthday", in which the poor orphan boy found warmth and sympathy in his new children's family.Descriptions of nature in the stories charm the reader with the keen penetration into its spiritual beauty."The Web" was written during the writer's travel in Italy. The charm of Adriatica and masterpieces of Italian art impress the reader. We chose for translation the stories, less known for the broad public.

Tapping into the emergence of scholarly comedy studies since the 2000s, this collection brings new perspectives to bear on the Dostoevskian light side. Funny Dostoevksy demonstrates how and why Dostoevsky is one of the most humorous 19th-century authors, even as he plumbs the depths of the human psyche and the darkest facets of European modernity. The authors go beyond the more traditional categories of humor, such as satire, parody, and the carnivalesque, to apply unique lenses to their readings of Dostoevsky. These include cinematic slapstick and the body in Crime and Punishment, the affective turn and hilarious (and deadly) impatience in Demons, and ontological jokes in Notes from Underground and The Idiot. The authors – (coincidentally?) all women, including some of the most established scholars in the field alongside up-and-comers – address gender and the marginalization of comedy, culminating in a chapter on Dostoevsky's "funny and furious" women, and explore the intersections of gender and humor in literary and culture studies. Funny Dostoevksy applies some of the latest findings on humor and laughter to his writing, while comparative chapters bring Dostoevsky's humor into conjunction with other popular works, such as Chaplin's Modern Times and Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton. Written with a verve and wit that Dostoevsky would appreciate, this boldly original volume illuminates how humor and comedy in his works operate as vehicles of deconstruction, pleasure, play, and transcendence.

The Brothers Karamazov, which was published as a serial in The Russian Messenger from January 1879 to November 1880. The author died less than four months after its publication. The Brothers Karamazov is a passionate philosophical novel set in 19th century Russia, that enters deeply into the ethical debates of God, free will, and morality. It is a spiritual drama of moral struggles concerning faith, doubt, judgement, and reason, set against a modernizing Russia, with a plot which revolves around the subject of patricide. Dostoyevsky composed much of the novel in Staraya Russa, which inspired the main setting.Since its publication, it has been acclaimed as one of the supreme achievements in world literature.Although Dostoyevsky began his first notes for The Brothers Karamazov in April 1878, he had written several unfinished works years earlier. He would incorporate some elements into his future work, particularly from the planned epos The Life of a Great Sinner, which he began work on in the summer of 1869. It eventually remained unfinished after Dostoyevsky was interested in the Nechaev affair, which involved a group of radicals murdering one of their former members. He picked up that story and started with The Possessed. The unfinished Drama in Tobolsk is considered the first draft of the first chapter of The Brothers Karamazov. Dated 13 September 1874, it tells about a fictional murder in Staraya Russa committed by a praporshchik named Dmitry Ilynskov (based on a real soldier from Omsk), who is thought to have murdered his father. It goes on noting that his body was suddenly discovered in a pit under a house. The similarly unfinished Sorokoviny dated 1 August 1875, is reflected in book IX, chapter 3-5 and book XI, chapter nine.In the October 1877 A Writer's Diary article "To the Reader", Dostoyevsky mentioned a "literary work that has imperceptibly and involuntarily been taken shape within me over these two years of publishing the Diary". His Diary, a collection of numerous articles, had included similar themes The Brothers Karamazov would later borrow from. These include patricide, law and order and social problems.
