Excerpt from Down North on the Labrador It was too cold to eat, and though they dry matches in bottles, like the careful h ers they were, the force of the wind mad utterly impossible. A hare they had that day was as hard as a piece of iron, they were too cold and wretched to bre and eat it raw. All night they walked up and down up and down in the dark. Returning time to look for their boat, they found the gale had piled the sea so high that was actually rolling over in the surf, with her their few remaining things gone, including their axe and kettle. Excerpt from Down to the Sea: Yarns From the Labrador There is no country in the world where the glories of the aurora borealis can so frequently be enjoyed. The weird northern lights, called by the Eskimo the spirits of the dead at play, are seen dancing in the sky on almost every clear night. The glorious red morning light, stealing over these rugged peaks, and steeping, in blood, as it were, the pinnacles of the loftiest icebergs in the world, forms a contrast with the deep blue of the ocean and the glistening white in a way that will hold the dullest spellbound. The endless stream of fantastic icebergs at all times enlivens the monotony of a boundless ocean. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Labrador It has been said by some one, within recent years, that all the places now unexplored were so miserably bad that no one would care to have anything to do with them. The caribou country or northeastern Labrador may or may not be an exception to this rule. There are worse regions to wander in. Moreover, the people are to be considered. Not every one cares for native races, but most wilderness travelers do. I have myself found the Labrador people well worth while. This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1908 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER IV THE EASTERN COAST OF LABRADOR "The sea.gulls wheeled around the rocky cape And skimmed their long wings lightly o'er the flood; The fog rose up in many a spectral shape."--S. C. E. Mayo. "North, East, and South, there are reefs and breakers You would never dream of in smooth weather, That toss and gore the sea for acres, Bellowing and gnashing and snarling together."--/. R. Lowell. T7R0M the rocks of Battle Island some brighteyed boys discovered the smoke of the mail-steamer Virginia Lake coming down from St. Johns, Newfoundland, about ten o'clock on the morning of July 15th. At noon we were climbing up her steep steps as she lay at anchor at the northern mouth of the harbour, surrounded by a throng of fishing-boats. The Virginia Lake is a staunch screw steamer, considerably larger than the Home, and well fitted for conflicts with the ice, as she is employed as a sealer every spring. Her decks were cluttered with lumber, oil casks, and odds and ends of every description. She had not the air of a well-appointed yacht or tourist steamer, but both she and her bluff captain gave one the impression of staunchness and reliability. To the north there is but one lighthouse on the whole rugged coast, and no fog-horns in a region where fog abounds, as well as rocks and reefs innumerable and unchartered. A priori the trip seemed hazardous, but after one knows the Virginia Lake and Captain Parsons, a feeling of confidence takes the place of any anxiety that may have existed. The knowledge of the coast shown by the good captain, and his conscientious care in guiding the vessel are unexcelled. Every rock, every shoal, every tickle, he knows as one knows the streets of one's native city. A glance through the fog at a headland, the...

Excerpt from Harbor Jim of Newfoundland There's Harbor Jim! And Bob pointed over his shoulder in the direction of the boat as he Spoke the words. It gave me a thrill, as the light brought him sharply to my attention, to see him standing there, intently looking toward the harbor entrance. I looked from the shore even as he looked from his boat and the sun at that moment uncovered the rocks on both sides. He lifted his hand and the helper behind him brought the sail to the faint breeze that was springing up, and the boat headed for the harbor entrance and the open sea. The sun seemed to lift Bob's spirit and the sight of Harbor Jim to warm the cockles of his heart, for he began in a good-natured draw] to tell me of the finding of his friend. It was the third week in March, eleven years ago, come next spring, that we were sealing down North. Harbor Jim and I were then on Cap'en Boynton's ship. I didn't know Jim then more'n any other fellow. It was an odd kind of a trip. For days it hung nasty and we couldn't have seen a seal if he had been within shot of us.
