Covering the entire period from the colonial era to the late twentieth century, this book is the first scholarly history of the homeless in America. Drawing on sources that include records of charitable organizations, sociological studies, and numerous memoirs of formerly homeless persons, Kusmer demonstrates that the homeless have been a significant presence on the American scene for over two hundred years. He probes the history of homelessness from a variety of angles, showing why people become homeless; how charities and public authorities dealt with this social problem; and the diverse ways in which different class, ethnic, and racial groups perceived and responded to homelessness. Kusmer demonstrates that, despite the common perception of the homeless as a deviant group, they have always had much in common with the average American. Focusing on the millions who suffered downward mobility, Down and Out, On the Road provides a unique view of the evolution of American society and raises disturbing questions about the repeated failure to face and solve the problem of homelessness.

After an exhausting day of hard labour, Ben finds oblivion in the seedy bars and clubs of River Road – anything to leave his cockroach-infested rooms and ignore the reality of living paycheck to paycheck. At times, it's difficult to remember that it wasn't always this way. Somehow, he went from a promising career as a soldier to a disgraceful dismissal and a steady decline into poverty. Now the only thing Ben has left to lose is hope. Writing with colourful realism, Meja Mwangi paints an unforgettable depiction of life in Nairobi's slums – drawing attention to the hardships of the working poor and their disillusion with uncaring politicians. With a unique blend of candour and humour, Down the Road Never Travelled chronicles the arduous journey Brigitte Pellerin and her fellow researchers undertook in their attempts to track a tax dollar through one government spending program. Imagine coming home one evening and announcing to your significant other that the only way to truly understand how government worked was to study it from the ground up - to literally look into the sewer lines, leaking water mains, pothole-ridden roads and collapsing bridges of Canadian cities. This was Pellerin's goal when she embarked on an investigation of the Canada Infrastructure Works Program (CIWP), a government initiative that promised to repair the country's crumbling infrastructure and create jobs for Canadians. The task, Pellerin believed, would be relatively easy: to determine whether the government did what it said it would under this program. How hard could that be? As it turned out, it was nearly impossible.

Maynard Olms is an eighty-year-old bachelor who lives in a three-room house with his wolf-dog, Duke, in the Ozark Mountains of southern Missouri. John and Marcella Washburn and their two children, Kelsey and Andrew, live on one end of Coon Hollow Road. Maynard and Duke live on the other. It is the summer of 1988, “the nation’s worst drought in 50 years,” declares the July 4, 1988, issue of Time Magazine. Cattle are starving as Missouri pastures shrivel and die in the heat. Gardens yield no vegetables for canning and freezing. Orchard trees produce only nubbins of fruit. Apprehension seeps into the already-impoverished community. On the first day of seventh grade, Kelsey Washburn comes home and tells her parents about her new friend, Ava McKittrick, who has just moved into their rural neighborhood from Arkansas. Motherless Ava, who lives with her father, Ben McKittrick, is a child prodigy in math and science. A relationship blossoms between elderly Maynard and the two teenage girls, Kelsey and Ava. The girls carry supper to Maynard two nights a week. They stack his firewood, listen to his harmonica, and soak up the wisdom of his yarns. The girls confide in Maynard, telling him about their dreams of college and hoped-for careers as a scientist and a veterinarian. Maynard, who lives like a pauper, actually has a fortune hidden on his Missouri property. When Maynard dies, his Last Will and Testament directs that his money be distributed to Kelsey and Ava, to be used for their college educations, “if they can find it.” But Maynard’s evil nephew, Clayton Olms, also has his sights set on finding Maynard’s money and shows up on Coon Hollow Road at the most inopportune time. It’s a winner-takes-all treasure hunt between two teenage girls and Clayton Olms, a convicted criminal wielding a gun! Ultimately, Duke, Maynard’s beautiful wolf-dog determines who finds the hidden treasure.

Going Down the Road By: Jim Armstrong Jim Armstrong started out following a similar path many others have walked, owning almost nothing and having expectations that matched. However his life took a different turn – different enough that he felt compelled to tell his story of challenges leading to success. Wanting our children, grandchildren and future generations to understand the circumstances that impacted their lives, Armstrong offers up his story so that they and others can learn from his experiences. In addition to being his personal memoirs, Going Down the Road outlines the beginnings and the history of JDA Software, which grew from a one man firm to a major firm to a major international technology company. It documents my transition from an unskilled laborer in the Canadian mining town of Elliot Lakes to CEO of a publicly held company in the United States. Pages within describe some of the interesting characters encountered along the journey, as well challenges and the resolution to those challenges. This includes tales of crazy dot.com bubble of the 1990’s and vibrant recollections of travels and involvement with noteworthy charitable endeavors. “I have always felt a responsibility to tell my tale. This is it” -Jim Armstrong

Isolated in the countryside, the community holds their own. But when two strangers from San Antonio stumble into town, they bring news of a global peacekeeping force sweeping toward the city. Led by a ruthless commander, the force is determined to secure the republic of Texas on its own terms, and establish a new, harsh government for the plague-ravaged nation. Will the independently fortified Texas town hold out against the flesh-eating zombies and the tyrannical foreign army traveling down the road?
