Escrito em dezembro de 1976, o texto foi incluído no calendário em que os contos foram publicados originalmente, em 1977, e permanecia inédito em livro. O livro reúne histórias do folclore nacional, uma para cada mês do ano, recontadas por uma das maiores escritoras do século XX. A história que dá nome ao livro, por exemplo, conta como, em uma aldeia indígena, travessos curumins deram origem a "gordas estrelas brilhantes". A certa altura, diz Clarice: "Aconteceu uma coisa que só acontece quando a gente acredita" e segue contando a bela lenda dos indiozinhos que subiram ao céu em cipós amarrados pelos colibris para fugir da bronca das mães. Ao longo das páginas, lendas indígenas e personagens folclóricos como Pedro Malazarte, Saci-pererê e Negrinho do pastoreio ganham nova vida pela escrita de Clarice, que dialoga com os pequenos com naturalidade e sagacidade de janeiro a dezembro. Para o último mês do ano, aliás, a escritora reservou "Uma lenda verdadeira", em que conta, com uma linguagem colorida de esperança, a história do nascimento do menino Jesus.

No entanto, algumas das lendas incorporadas ao livro serviram de temas a obras famosas da literatura brasileira, sem se popularizarem. Caso da Cobra-Norato, que inspirou o poema famoso de Raul Bopp, tão original em sua expressão e origem, ao contrário de outras que, sem perder a identificação com a terra, são variantes de tradições multisseculares, presentes em todos os povos. É o caso da missa dos mortos, da cidade encantada, residência de uma linda rainha, que para ser desencantada exige um sacrifício de sangue, e das cidades desaparecidas nas águas do mar ou de rios, em geral por castigo divino, em cujo local se ouvem rumores estranhos, lembrando as bíblicas Sodoma e Gomorra. Uma boa parte das lendas reunidas no livro foi ouvida, e registrada, por Luís da Câmara Cascudo diretamente da boca do povo. Para as demais, utilizou fontes escritas, colhidas em obras de escritores ilustres, como o mineiro Afonso Arinos e o gaúcho Simões Lopes Neto, mas também em revistas de difícil acesso, livros raros. Esses textos encontram-se reproduzidos fielmente, com anotações de mestre Cascudo, esclarecendo o significado de termos regionais, fixando a difusão da história.
