Meet the boy who made up his own language — and brought hope to millions. Once there was a town of many languages but few kind words. Growing up Jewish in Bialystok, Poland, in the late 1800s, young Leyzer Zamenhof was surrounded by languages: Russian, Yiddish, German, Polish, and many others. But the multiethnic Bialystok was full of mistrust and suspicion, and Leyzer couldn’t help but wonder: If everyone could understand each other, wouldn’t they be able to live in peace? So Zamenhof set out to create a new language, one that would be easy to learn and could connect people around the world. He published a book of his new language and signed it Dr. Esperanto — “one who hopes.” Mara Rockliff uses her unique knack for forgotten history to tell the story of a young man who saw possibility where others saw only barriers, while Polish illustrator Zosia Dzierzawska infuses every scene with warmth and energy, bringing the story of Esperanto to life.

The Universal Book for the Universal Language. As one of the only works personally supervised by Dr L. L. Zamenhof, this book is crucial to understanding not only the mechanisms of Esperanto as a language but also the spirit of its mission. Esperanto was founded with the aim of fostering world peace and bringing individuals from different societies together. Zamenhof and O'Connor hoped for a more communicative and co-operative future for humankind and sought to bring it about via this language. In this book you will see a fascinating regular structure to the language and a generous range of inspirations taken from European languages. Learning a language is always a beautiful and challenging experience and this book has everything you will need to get underway on that journey with vocabulary lists, exercises, comprehension passages and even a guide to idiom in Esperanto. Unlike other language learning tools, this book has the advantage that the original peaceful meaning of the language shows through in the pages. This book is representative of a moment which inspired people across the world to begin reaching out to each other, breaking down cultural barriers and creating a multinational community of learners. What's more, it will enable you to be in that moment with J. C. O'Connor and L. L. Zamenhof and feel the infectious enthusiasm for language and optimism for our global society. Contained in these pages is the capacity to not only tell between 'Kio' and 'Kiu' but also to know why, an opportunity no other language can match. Excerpt from The American Esperanto Book: A Compendium of the International Language Esperanto This volume is based upon the Ekzercaro by Dr. Zamenhof. All the exercises are taken from it and are therefore absolutely authoritative. The notes and translations, with the discussion of the grammar, while containing much original work, are also indebted to the following sources: The Standard Course of Esperanto, by George W. Bullen, F.B. E.A.; Esperanta Sintakso, by Sro. Paul Fruictier; Grammar and Commentary, by Major-General George Cox. The Esperanto-English vocabulary is compiled from the second edition of the Esperanto-English Dictionary, by A. Motteau, and Worterbuch Esperanto-Deutsch, by Hermann Jurgensen, the latter volume being preferred where the two are not in concord. Supplementing these, the English-Esperanto Dictionary, by J.C. O'Connor and C.F. Hayes, is drawn upon for the matter contained in the English-Esperanto vocabulary. How to Study Read carefully the first part of the book, pages 7 to 76 inclusive. Esperanto written by Pierre Janton and has been published by SUNY Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1993-01-01 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Esperanto, spoken by thousands of people across the world, is the most successful international language project. In this book, the French linguist and literary critic Pierre Janton describes the history of Esperanto since its invention in nineteenth-century Eastern Europe and offers a comprehensive linguistic description of the language. This book is the best general introduction to Esperanto and its role in the modern world. Rooted in the populism and internationalism of the late nineteenth century, Esperanto owes its origins in part to western European educational currents and in part to the cultural history of eastern European Jewry. It is a fascinating historical and sociological phenomenon as well as a remarkable linguistic system. The book contains a survey of today’s movement for the promotion of Esperanto as an international language, and a description of the extensive literature in Esperanto, both original and translated. Janton also provides a survey of the other global language projects, explaining why Esperanto has prevailed.

Excerpt from Esperanto (the Universal Language): The Student's Complete Text Book; Containing Full Grammar, Exercises, Conversations, Commercial Letters, and Two Vocabularies This revised edition of my Grammar of the Auxiliary International Language, "Esperanto" - the first published for English readers - has had the great advantage of the personal supervision and official approval of the founder, Dr. Zamenhof. That it has been prepared to supply a want is not a mere façon de parler. Prior to the appearance of the first edition hundreds of inquirers, from most widely separated sections at home and abroad had written urgently requesting a grammar suitable for English students. These inquirers, for the most part, came to know of the existence of "Esperanto" through the medium of pamphlets, leaflets, letters in the public Press, etc., which could give, of necessity, only the merest idea and outline of the language. In compiling a book to meet this demand my chief desire and aim has been to prepare a Grammar, which, while being complete in all its parts and containing everything that is necessary for a sound knowledge of the language, should be brief, clear, full, but not redundant. Esperanto And Its Rivals written by Roberto Garvia and has been published by University of Pennsylvania Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-04-22 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

The problems of international communication and linguistic rights are recurring debates in the present-day age of globalization. But the debate truly began over a hundred years ago, when the increasingly interconnected world of the nineteenth century fostered a desire for the development of a global lingua franca. Many individuals and social movements competed to create an artificial language unencumbered by the political rivalries that accompanied English, German, and French. Organizations including the American Philosophical Society, the International Association of Academies, the International Peace Bureau, the Comintern, and the League of Nations intervened in the debate about the possibility of an artificial language, but of the numerous tongues created before World War II, only Esperanto survives today. Esperanto and Its Rivals sheds light on the factors that led almost all artificial languages to fail and helped English to prevail as the global tongue of the twenty-first century. Exploring the social and political contexts of the three most prominent artificial languages—Volapük, Esperanto, and Ido—Roberto Garvía examines the roles played by social movement leaders and inventors, the strategies different organizations used to lobby for each language, and other early decisions that shaped how those languages spread and evolved. Through the rise and fall of these artificial languages, Esperanto and Its Rivals reveals the intellectual dilemmas and political anxieties that troubled the globalizing world at the turn of the twentieth century.
