Diluted polymer solutions, surfactants, microbubbles and compliant coating as drag reducers have been reviewed in this report. The advantages and disadvantages of each method have been discussed. For the polymer solutions, it is possible to achieve up to 80 % drag reduction with only a few parts per million of polymer. Ionic and non-ionic surfactants can also offer similar drag reduction as polymer solutions but at a high concentration of few percent. Microbubbles are perhaps the cheapest and non-polluted drag reducer. However, the control of the bubble size and the angle of ejection can impose technical challenges. This method can be combined with other drag reduction (DR) technologies such as polymers to enhance its effectiveness. Compliant coating can be designed to behave in a similar fashion to the skin of a dolphin.The development of the compliant coating is theoretically complicated, although the optimized coating can offer a DR up to 50%. Despite the extensive research in the area of DR over the past four decades, for each DR technology there is no universally accepted model that explains the DR mechansim. Application fo DR technology with microbubbles to the ship hull indicated a 10 -15 % reduction in drag. The full scale testing of a submarine by the US NAvy has shoen that polymer ejection has the potential to reduce the self-noise, darg and radiated noise generated by the propellor.

This study focused on two accepted methods for quantifying the benefit of aerodynamic improvement technologies on vocational vehicles: the coastdown technique, and on-road constant speed fuel economy measurements. Both techniques have their advantages. Coastdown tests are conducted over a wide range in speed and allow the rolling resistance and aerodynamic components of road load force to be separated. This in turn allows for the change in road load and fuel economy to be estimated at any speed, as well as over transient cycles. The on-road fuel economy measurements only supply one lumped result, applicable at the specific test speed, but are a direct measurement of fuel usage and are therefore used in this study as a check on the observed coastdown results. Resulting coefficients were then used to populate a vehicle model and simulate expected annual fuel savings over real-world vocational drive cycles.

The survival of the Aeronautical Industries of Europe in the highly competitive World Aviation Market is strongly dependent on such factors as time-to-market of a new or derivative aircraft and on its manufacturing costs but also on the achievement of a competitive technological advantage by which an increased market share can be gained. Recognizing this, cooperative research is continuously encouraged and co-financed by the European Union in order to strengthen the scientific and technological base of the Aeronautical Industries thus providing - among others - the technological edge needed for survival. Corresponding targets of research within Area 3, Technologies for Transport Means, and here in particular Area 3A, Aeronautics Technologies, of the Industrial and Materials Technologies Program ( Brite -EuRam III, 1994 -1998) have been identified to be aircraft efficiency, cost effectiveness and environmental impact. Concerning aircraft efficiency - relevant to the present research - a reduction in aircraft drag of 10%, a reduction in aircraft fuel consumption of 30%, and a reduction in airframe, engine and system weight of 20% are envisaged. Meeting these objectives has, of course, also a strong positive impact on the environment.

Experimental studies of polymer drag-reduction were carried out in the laboratory of Thomas J. Hanratty. Companion studies were carried out in the polymer laboratory of Anthony J. McHugh so that the performance of drag-reducing polymer solutions can be related to their rheological and rheo-optical properties in simple non-turbulent flows. The work was influenced by the notion that aggregation of polymer molecules could be an important role. A remarkable finding is that molecular weight and molecular weight distribution need not change as the drag-reducing ability of the polymer solution degraded. Rheo-optical studies in a Couette device showed that effective polymer solutions develop turbidity over a range of shear rates characteristic of those used in the flow loop. This study shows that the drag reduction can be enhanced by using mixing and delivery procedures which enhance the formation aggregates.
