Inhaltsangabe:Zusammenfassung: Thema dieser Arbeit ist die Frage nach der Darstellungsmöglichkeit der gesellschaftlichen Wirklichkeit in der Literatur des Naturalismus. Dazu ist es notwendig zu klären, ob überhaupt und wenn ja, wie der Begriff Wirklichkeit definiert werden kann. Gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts kam es in vielen Bereichen der Geisteswissenschaften ebenso wie in den Naturwissenschaften zu grundlegenden Erkenntnissen, die eine neue Wirklichkeitsauffassung mit sich brachten. Da die Struktur einer sozialen Gesellschaft von den sozialen Strukturen, die sie bilden, bestimmt ist, soll zunächst der Begriff soziale Struktur beleuchtet werden, um anhand der Gesellschaftstheorien von Georg Simmel und Karl Marx den Gesellschaftsbegriff des 19. Jahrhunderts näher bestimmen zu können. Dadurch soll ein Einblick in die soziale Wirklichkeit der Jahrhundertwende ermöglicht werden. Es wird zudem aufgezeigt, dass in der Kunsttheorie des Naturalismus das Prinzip der Kausalität eine tragende Rolle spielte, und die Erkenntnisse der Naturwissenschaften als Fundament der naturalistischen Kunstauffassung betrachtet wurden. Seine höchste dichterische Entfaltung fand der deutsche Naturalismus im Bereich des Dramas, da es nicht nur im individuellen Leseakt, sondern auch und hauptsächlich gemeinschaftlich und öffentlich aufgenommen wird. Als einer der wichtigsten Vertreter des deutschen Naturalismus wird Gerhart Hauptmann gesehen. Mit seinem Drama Vor Sonnenaufgang erreichte der deutsche Naturalismus seinen Höhepunkt. Anhand einer interpretierenden Untersuchung der Wirklichkeitsdarstellung in Gerhart Hauptmanns Vor Sonnenaufgang und dem Drama Die Familie Selicke von Arno Holz und Johannes Schlaf wird aufgezeigt, dass die Wirklichkeitsdarstellung im naturalistischen Drama unterschiedlich ausgeprägte Formen annehmen konnte. Es erweist sich, dass die Art der Wirklichkeitsdarstellung vom Blickwinkel des Verfassers abhängt. Dieser Umstand macht eine objektive Wirklichkeitsdarstellung schwer möglich, denn jeder Autor richtet seinen Blick auf nur einen Teilaspekt der Wirklichkeit und verleiht somit dem ausgewählten Ausschnitt mehr Gewicht als den vernachlässigten Realitätsaspekten. Es scheint zudem unmöglich, die Persönlichkeit des Autors auszuschalten, um einen objektiven Ausschnitt aus der Realität zu erhalten. First book in English devoted to Johannes Schlaf, the 19th-century German playwright, bringing fresh insights to the whole movement of German naturalist drama. This is the first book in English on the German playwright Johannes Schlaf (1862-1941), whose involvement in 'consistent realism' and modern theatre in the 1890s provides an insight into the origins and development of German naturalist drama. Schlaf's main contributions to this movement were with Die Familie Selicke (1890), on which he collaborated with Arno Holz, and Meister Oelze (1892), works which show his innovative talents. The author considers these works in the context of the experimental prose sketches which Schlaf worked on with Holz after 1888, and of the realist and naturalist dramas of Hebbel, Ibsen, Hauptmann, and Sudermann; he brings out their growing concern with trapped women and victimised children, as well as their critical focus on the problems of traditional poetry.
