Toch is bij nadere beschouwing de verhouding tussen geloof en wetenschap in het verleden niet zo gemakkelijk op één noemer te brengen. Het verhaal van de Belgische en de Nederlandse omgang met het positivisme kent grote parallellen. Toch getuigde de intellectuele cultuur in beide landen van eigen gevoeligheden, vergelijkbaar met de uiteenlopende ontwikkeling van het positivisme in Frankrijk en in Engeland. Toen Nietzsche, de legendarische grondlegger van het positivisme, Auguste Comte, in 1889 omschreef als een schrandere jezuïet die via de omweg van de wetenschap de Fransen naar Rome had willen leiden, gaf hij een rake typering van het negentiende-eeuwse positivisme. De wetenschap vormde voor het positivisme immers geen doel, maar een weg waarlangs een groots maatschappelijk, moreel en zelfs religieus project kon worden waargemaakt. Dat veelvormige project charmeerde ook Belgische en Nederlandse intellectuelen. Ook buiten het universitaire milieu, in vrijdenkers- en vrijmetselaarskringen en in politieke middens bleek het positivisme eveneens voorwerp van debat en controverse, waarbij gediscussieerd werd over materialisme, atheïsme of sciëntisme. In De omweg van de wetenschap schetst Kaat Wils een nieuw beeld van het negentiende-eeuwse positivisme en de receptie ervan in België en Nederland. Haar vergelijkende studie naar het Nederlandse en Belgische intellectuele klimaat laat zien hoezeer deze van elkaar verschilden.
