The Huntington collection of drawings by Thomas Rowlandson is generally regarded as the largest and most comprehensive at present in a public museum. The collection offers an unrivaled opportunity for the study of this prolific artist's range of interests and the development of his technique. As a line draftsman and humorist, Thomas Rowlandson was probably the finest England has ever produced. Certainly he had a wider command of comic devices and comes closer to exploiting their full potentialities than any other British artist. He is also wonderfully inventive in discovering and expressing the comic aspects of a great variety of everyday situations. His reputation as a humorist, though, should not obscure his achievement in other fields: he is a charming landscapist and genre artist, and a skillful portraitist. All these facets of Rowlandson's work are well represented in this volume, which reproduces and catalogues all of the Huntington drawings, including those from A Tour in a Post Chaise and The English Dance of Death, both previously published by the Huntington. In his introductory essay, Robert Wark discusses Rowlandson's art and illustrates the various aspects of his work by relating them to selected drawings that are reproduced in full color. The Huntington collection of British art includes not only the unrivaled full-length, life-size portrait paintings, but also many examples of the less familiar, more informal, but charming side of British portraiture--the drawings. In this book, twenty-five of these drawings are reproduced, each accompanied by a facing page of commentary. There are works in pencil, pen, wash, pastel, watercolor, and various combinations thereof. Some are presentation works intended to fill a more private and intimate function than the life-scale portraits in oil. Some are preparatory studies for works of art. Some are casual sketches made for the artist's own enjoyment or as a record of a memorable face. The drawings are representative examples of the work of twenty-five artists. They range in date from the early seventeenth century to the early twentieth and vary enormously in style and purpose. They include "plumbagos," miniatures in pencil done by the masters of the form, Loggan and Forster; drawings done in pencil and wash by Cosway, Lawrence, and Harlow; drawings by Greenhill and Gardner; and drawings used as preliminary studies for portraits to be done in oils by Ramsay, Fuseli, and Mortimer. In a single leather-bound volume of 238 unlined pages of parchment, Surgeon Arthur Bowes Smyth describes his two-and-a-half year journey with the First Fleet from Portsmouth in England to the new colony in Australia and back. He is a frank, articulate and observant writer, and his diary, a treasure of the National Library of Australia, covers life at sea, stopovers in the slave port of Rio de Janeiro and the tropical paradise of Tahiti, and three months of early settlement in Australia. As surgeon to more than 100 convict women on the Lady Penrhyn, Bowes Smyth gives an insight into the plight of these women, sentenced to transportation, and their children. Their voyage was marked by seasickness, miscarriage, infant deaths, a diet of salted meat and dry hardtack biscuits, and cruel punishment from thumb screws to gagging and flogging with a cat-o’-nine-tails. When they finally set foot on Australian soil, their travails did not end, being set upon by drunken sailors and crew in a ‘scene of debauchery and riot’. Bowes Smyth also describes medical incidents that would make a modern reader squirm, from extracting a ‘jigger worm’ from his own foot to a scurvy outbreak which resulted in bleeding noses, contracted muscles, emaciated bodies and swollen, blackening limbs. There are moments of high drama when mountainous seas threaten to overturn the ship or when passengers fall overboard, as well as calm days at sea spotting porpoises, whales, seals and all manner of sea birds. Upon finally reaching Botany Bay, Bowes Smyth describes ‘the joy which possessed every breast upon so long wished for an event’. He details early encounters with Aboriginal people and the struggles in setting up the new colony, which was plagued from the outset by food shortages, outbreaks of disease and crop failures. He also describes the promiscuity and lax morals of the convicts with typical flair, declaring their audacity ‘not to be equalled amongst a set of villains in any other part of the globe’. In First Fleet Surgeon, author David Hill brings to life the voyage of the Lady Penrhyn and the early months of settlement at Port Jackson (modern-day Sydney) through Bowes Smyth’s colourful language and frank anecdotes. Each chapter includes a page of Bowes Smyth’s handwritten diary entries accompanied by a full transcript, and is richly illustrated with paintings, lithographs and maps from the National Library of Australia’s collection. Combining historical and interpretive work, this collection examines changing perceptions of and relations between human and nonhuman animals in Britain over the long eighteenth century. Persistent questions concern modes of representing animals and animal-human hybrids, as well as the ethical issues raised by the human uses of other animals. From the animal men of Thomas Rowlandson to the part animal-part human creature of Victor Frankenstein, hybridity serves less as a metaphor than as a metonym for the intersections of humans and other animals. The contributors address such recurring questions as the implications of the Enlightenment project of naming and classifying animals, the equating of non-European races and nonhuman animals in early ethnographic texts, and the desire to distinguish the purely human from the entirely nonhuman animal. Gulliver's Travels and works by Mary and Percy Shelley emerge as key texts for this study.
