According to Yeats, his wife surprised him on 24 October 1917, four days after their marriage, "by attempting automatic writing." Excited, he offered to spend the remainder of his life organizing and explaining the "scattered sentences." Over a period of approximately 30 months they collaborated in 450 sittings, he asking questions, she responding to fill a total of more than 3,600 pages. Quoting copiously from the Script, Harper has traced in two volumes these incredible experiments day by day as the Yeatses moved about England, Ireland, and America. He has also cited hundreds of parallel explanatory passages from many workbooks, notebooks, and the concordance arranged like a card index in which Yeats codified the System he projected in A Vision and numerous poems and plays. Harper also has examined the extensive personal revelations that were excluded from A Vision and carefully concealed in many passages of "personal Script." As Professor Harper demonstrates, Yeats had these often oblique, highly allusive passages in mind when he admitted "To Vestigia" that he had "not even dealt with the whole of my subject, perhaps not even with what is most important, writing nothing about the Beatific Vision, little of sexual love."

A study of how English’s colonial history inflects the literary vernaculars of Anglo-Celtic modernists W. B. Yeats, Hugh MacDiarmid, and Marianne Moore. Haunted English explores the role of language in colonization and decolonization by examining how Anglo-Celtic modernists W. B. Yeats, Hugh MacDiarmid, and Marianne Moore “de-Anglicize” their literary vernaculars. Laura O’Connor demonstrates how the poets’ struggles with and through the colonial tongue are discernible in their signature styles, using aspects of those styles to theorize the dynamics of linguistic imperialism—as both a distinct process and an integral part of cultural imperialism. This book offers a detailed look into the life and works of Pulitzer Prize-winning Jewish American poet George Oppen. Born in 1908 in New York State, Oppen spent parts of his life working as a die cutter and carpenter and later running a furniture factory. Like the work he did with his hands during those years, his poetry used basic materials; he favored short, simple nouns and focused on concrete objects rather than abstractions. This book examines the characteristics of Oppen's work, particularly his use of small and often odd phrasings and unusual line formations to express the ultimately inexpressible. The first three chapters delve into his primitive modes, language and materials. Subsequent chapters tackle his subjects: cityscapes, light and water, and then animals and their relation to human history and struggles. His final collection of poems, Primitive, is examined in its own chapter, which is followed by an exploration of recurring specific phrases and concrete images.
